Yard gates

ok guys todays job was to look at some entrance gates , my ex boss who i now do a lot of sub contract work for has bought this property (office block yard and stores ) . It had be repocessed and someone had made a right mess of the entrance gates probably to retrieve some of there property
Looks like they were jacked open somehow
Just a little bit twised too

He initially said he wanted them repairing

Certainly not easy ,especially to make a tidy job like what he wants !
i think i convinced him to let me make a new set for him , i think the having to remove the rust and repaint every year or so, line i used helped

so i think we will probably go for box section frame with tripple pointed security fence pales , bolted onto the existing pillars galv and powder coated a bit like this style below

Doesnt need to" ornamental " like the old ones just strong and functional ie keep scrotes out
The gate pictured was made from 80 x40 box and each leaf is about 2m wide (its not my work i might add )

I would want to up the spec a bit as each leaf on the new one are about 2.8 m wide and will be 2.4 m high .

I would allso fab some corner plates to mount the hinges nearer the outside of the pillars so the gates and fold out wider (at the moment they fold out towards the road and is not ideal as vehicles would be partly in the road whilst gaining enty .)

so guys any more suggestions on spec or any comments in general ,

There no longer that shape, as supprise supprise they've managed to hit em, there 4x4" box section basic frome with pails and anti tamper bolts bought in, TBH I ended up loseing on the job they cost much more than I initialy quoted on, then we hit the main power supply to the yard when we sunk the pads........

Theyd be an easy repair job Mikey. Might need a couple of new bars, but no more than a days work to sort them, might well be worth blasting and galving, they look quite nice, and seems like theres some more surronding the site...


Last palisade gates i made were from 100x65x10 angle, makes it nice and easy to fix the fillers on, but quite heavy
Hinges had to be bolt on to existing posts (one of which was cracked off at the base)

cheers snowy , you must of bolted the pales to some angle i presume id rather weld them on and probably go for 80x80 x 3 frame with gussets at the hinge side ??

probably distort tho all the welding on one side , any tips to stop that apart from clamp down to an rsj !?

Hitch im dissapointed in you thats not what i wanted to hear , not so sure about an easy repair , its much worse than the photos suggest (honest ! )
its not often i get to work with shiney new metal , its mostly rusty old ***** like theses gates or galvanised stalling on milking parlours .
so making some nice new gates appeals to me

Put it this way Mikey, the bigger your hammer is, the easier they are to straighten

If you havnt got gas and something nice and solid, you might struggle though i must admit....

With regard to welding them on, you can get pre-punched, id steer clear of welding.
Get the frame hot dip galv, then bolt them on after.

If any get abused, they are easy to replace, and it saves disturbing the galv on them or the frame.

yes bolted to angle, the pales were punched and coated, I just made the frames to suit,
Id avoid welding them as hitch said...

with regard to the hinges I made a double clevis and machined some pins to suit and welded them on, those gates are ****** heavy!!!

If you keep the material fairly beefy then your not need to over brace, a gusset in each corner and job done.....

Yea hadnt thought about replacing damaged ones to be honest , good point
i think he was quite keen to get them powder coated tho , i presume the pales would need coating then fixing afterwards althogh i think you can get the pales already coated ?? not certain .

oh and bolt on pales would need a angle frame , i would prefer box frame for ridgidity or was your spec angle pretty ridgid dont want any twist in them !

i dont have acces to oxy accetylene and my largest hammer is a lump , so i think a repair is NOT going to happen

thats if i can keep the new ones to an aceptable price
i have under quoted before tho , dont want to do that too many times

I built a 4" box frame using some 2x4" heavy walled for the hinge end, then just tacked 2 pieces of 2" angle to hold all the pales, I got me mate to knock the holes through on his metalworker to save drilling them........

Its easiest to bolt all the pales on once there hung, there surprisingly flimsy and bend very easily...... a windy-gun is ideal as you have to sheer all the AT bolts off..
