I sure can relate to that, got my moped road ready for my 16th birthday, rode to school for the last few months even.
why are they not craving for 2 wheels?
I got to say though, I wouldn't want my off spring mixing with other road users on a 50cc, you need a 125 at least, something which could get you away from trouble shall we say.

I don't get why the independence/coming of age isn't an aspect in today's youth it would seem, why are they not craving for 2 wheels?

Aged 16 - I got a five day a week job (apprenticeship in a garage) - Thursdays off on day release at a collage full of girls my age - plus a Saturday job in a tyre bay for extra cash - I got a girlfriend - moped - started going out drinking - living at Mums/Dads - she was feeding me - packing my sandwiches up and doing my washing - best year of my life...
I wish I could re live it again I would gladly do it...
Now what do they do - sit in there bedrooms glued to phones and gamestations.
