do does that mean my lights are projector because they have a metal cap on the end of the bulb?
I bought a Cibie Z beam headlamp unit-whole unit designed to work with the H4 bulb-result-I could do daylight riding speeds at night.
As to cars with headlamp levellers and washers thats all very well as long as the driver knows he/she has got them and remembers to use them-ditto remembering what the little light means when you have left the high intensity fogs on.
With the exception of 'reflector optics' aka free-form headlights the lens and reflectors both play a role with regards to beam pattern. As said projectors use a shield (can be moveable for dipped & main beam from a single source) to set the beam cut off while with reflector designs the lens plays a bigger roleam i right in thinking projector lights beam is governed by the glass at front and a reflector is governed but the reflectors behind?
True the way beam cut off is done improves things but the light sources and focal lengths are still completely different resulting in glare and brighter isn't better if the beam pattern is screwed up as a result i.e. the area of the road they actually light. All covered in detail in the link i posted with my origional rant... http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/Hid/conversions/conversions.htmlNo one has mentioned projector vs reflector lights. Beam pattern in a projector (even one intended for halogen) is still quite good with HID retro fitted. It's hopeless in a reflector, granted.
My 1976 XJ6 had halogen SEALED BEAMS !
It's completely automatic on factory fit systems. The washers spray when you use the windscreen washers (providing the lights are switched on) makes sense as the windscreen and lights are getting the same exposure to dirt.
The levelling system is ofcourse totally automatic, reacting to differences in height between front and rear suspension.
Can't argue with the fogs bit, biggest problem with any car is the big nut behind the wheel.
Wonder if the car tech boys can come up a system to stop four driving folks from pulling out into the path of motorcyclists.
Some of the new Range Rovers have cameras in the corner of the front bumper so you can see more sideways before pulling out of a side road, they just need to develop motorcycle image recognition software to apply the brakes when neccessary!.
High end cars are fitted with active lighting, which uses input from the steering angle sensor to swivel the beam sideways for better vis. when cornering or pulling out as mentioned above by Robostar.

ive never taken any notice ti car lights except changing bulbs like for like
The talk of different beam patterns are utter BS.
Whilst illegal there's nothing wrong with hids in halogen units.
