Wrong wheelnuts. Wheels knackered?

Yes. Front wheel, which had been doing 70 the evening before.
The wheel had been off a few times shortly before this and nothing was visible to give warning that this may happen. The nuts have never been run slack and they've not pulled through the rim but the taper part detached and was still securely clamped in place.

What about using flanged nuts?

Hi, there're steel tapered seats inserts available for alloy wheels, so you could try drilling out what's there and welding in a new seat. -

Like this, and then weld it into the wheel after opening the seat out slightly to get a 60 degree surface?

Wouldn't the conical adaptor work without welding?
Or there is some issue I don't see?

I was thinking that by cleaning up the old seat to 60 degrees after grit blasting I could TIG braze the insert after bolting all 4 nuts down to ensure they were fixed correctly in place, otherwise they could wander. The braze would also add to the surface area in contact, wouldn't it?

Oh yes....saw that one when I was writing a training course for Pilots after a rejected take-off.

Those cone inserts look like a good way forward - though I wouldn't bother TIG brazing them in, just crack on with any ordinary welding method...

Interesting little side issue. Rostyle wheels have a 60 degree taper (common enough) but Morris Minor wheels use a 66 degree taper. Wonder if that is how these got knackered.
