Wrong Sized Copper Tip?

I decided to do some gasless MIG welding this morning, but without the shroud. This was after watching a YouTube video on the subject.

Suffice to say, I managed to weld the flux core wire to the contact tip and heard the wire feed stuttering, so I immediately stopped.

I removed the tip and filed down the welded area, but the welding was still stuttery. I thought "no problem, I've got spare tips from eBay".

I tried to fit one, but it almost seemed to be the wrong wire diameter (too small), even though it's marked 0.8. The rest of the spares I got from eBay are the same.

On closer inspection, it looks like the hole in the centre isn't spherical, unlike the supplied one.

Has anyone came across this before?

A, that tip looks dodgy. Its got a Burr on the end. Try filing the end down and it might go away or run a countersink into it.
B, Check the flux wire size and make sure its actually 0.8

If you have a 1mm drill, try drilling it out, you’ve got nothing to lose as the tip is no good as it is. It was recommended at one time by Clarke to use a size larger tip for gasless as the wire deforms out of round & tends to jam. Not sure if this is still the case though. Got to be worth a try for practice. I shall probably get all sorts of comments saying Noooooo for this but …

Have you checked the wire size? Fluxcore is often thicker (0.9mm)

Id second double checking you haven't got 0.9mm wire although I usually run 0.9mm tips for flux core as standard anyway even if I'm using 0.8mm wire

It's definitely 0.8mm SIP flux cored wire.

I managed to get a tip the was in reasonable condition. I fitted it, but the welding wasn't as smooth as the previous tip was. I've got some Impax ones coming from Screwfix tomorrow.

It is, as I bought it from Toolstation (SIP) branded.

If it's from toolstation just return it for replacement and check the new ones when they hand them over.

The wire is fine, it's the tips from eBay that are the problem.

With flux core its best to go up a size with tips,ie 0.8 wire use 0.9 tips
You also want a bit more stick out from the tip to the work piece,start at around 15mm-20mm
