Wrong Hardener Question

Hi Guys,

A young guy who helps me at my workshop has sprayed some bits for me while I was away but has used the wrong hardener. The bits were sprayed last night and are still tacky.

He sprayed Jotun hardtop XP but used the Jotamastic 80 hardener unfortunately. I've used the heat gun on one bit and it goes very tacky with heat and them seems to dry to not so tacky in about 5 min. Is there any chance the paint will harden ok or will it need to come off? The parts are the bottom of the fuel tank, rear mudflap plates and a drive shaft bearing bracket. I can see the funny side of it and it's only a little stuff up just need to get on and fix it if need be.

I think the answer to that can only be wait and see mate although if they were sprayed last night I wouldn't hold out much hope

Yep, not holding my breath. He was proud of the job as well so is a bit funny.

It will never harden, the Hardtop needs an isocyanate hardener and an epoxy hardener has been used.

I have a funny story where a friend rang me about painting COB, while I was telling him the process he kept interupting and I said "are you listening" any way I carried on and off he went to do the job, rang me 3 days later saying it was all still sticky

I asked did he follow what I had told him, He then got angry and started shouting and went through the whole process I had told him, except he stated he had definitely put the right hardener in the basecoat

I just said "you don't put hardener in basecoat ya numpty" He was then very apologetic

I left him washing it off with gunwash

ive never had this experience but I wonder if you could mix up a little paint with the correct hardener in it give it a light coat in the hope the chemical reaction would spread through the tacky paint

That would be a nightmare as you would be left with a hard skin over a soft substrate. The reaction needs a certain amount of chemicals to react with, it's not a chain reaction.

Thanks guys, bit the bullet and washed the topcoat and gravitex off. Will get Nick to have another go.
