would love a welding job!!

Hi folks!! i would like your help and advice please! I have a job already but it isn't any thing to do with welding. I'm doing a welding course at college, i love it, i carn't wait for the next lesson. I know that what i realy want is to get out there and find a welding job. I'm in my early 30's. I would like to know if i would stand a chance of getting a job now or should i wait till i have finnished my course?? i'm a little nervous cos of being female and i have thought about who and what about i'm going to talk about at break times in a welding job, but thinking about it there is only 3 of us girls on day shift where i am, so i think i will be ok. Please please can someone help me or give me some advise how to get into a welding job!!!

You can cope with people putting rusty lumps of car and exhaust in front of you and saying, 'could you just'..............

You can totally ignore drawings.

You can deal with being someones best mate when they've got a homer on.

Go to all the fab shops you know or fined in the phone book and ask for work , sit any test they ask for and wait and see. Lay the right weld and It doesn't matter if your time served or not, male or female. That's how I did it when i was looking for work.
It is a male dominated industry but if you show your worth and fit in a good firm should give you a go.
As an employer if your better than the rest you get the job! male or female

Seconded Tomb's advice.

Many jobs are not advertised. Much easier for potential employers to take one someone they know is good and available than go to all the hassle of advertising and interviewing. Can't think of any job I've had in the last 15 years that was advertised. Get yourself known and something will come back.

Worth getting yourself known before the end of the course - an excuse might be asking advice on what exactly the employers require so you can go do it on the course. Visit, don't phone. Try to keep in touch after the first visit, and then if all else fails you have the excuse to contact everyone at the end of the course to let them know you are available. Get to know people.

Worth asking just in places where you would want to work.

aw!! cheers!! i realy do enjoy my college work and if i do anything wrong i always go back and give it 110% and if that still isn't good enough i aim even higher till i will get it right. i just hope they will give me the chance, and guess what?? i ain't gonna give up untill i do get it!!! my college tutor said i'm doing ok and i haven't got anything to worry about.. so i am going to try no matter what... i'm not going to give up,, this is what i want...

When i was at college, i needed to get a 2 week work placement to enable me to finish the course.
I rang a few places (it was before i could drive). None of the ones i rang could help, but one did give me a few leads.
I did my two week, and was offered a permanenet position at the end of it.
If you can get in somewhere, do your best.

As for tea break talk, you really dont want to know.
One of our older members gets all upset and sits in his car its that bad sometimes.

thx malcolm!! i been to two companies already two weeks ago,, this is how much i want it. I refuse to sit around watching everyone else getting what they want, this is it for me, i know i look after my dad, but if i got myself a good paid welding job i could be much happier myself and also be able to get help for my dad as well maybe.. i did plumbing years ago i was only 17 years old, i was young and got into a relationship that lasted 12 years, i didn't finnish the course cos i was in a relationship, but now at 32 i have decided to do this welding course becouse in plumbing the joining side like lead welding was what i was good at.. i am giving this course my all cos i have no kids and i'm single and have the me time to do it in and it is all i want for now becouse i feel i was given the chance at 17 but i threw it away and now it feels this is my last chance in a way, so no way am i gonna botch this chance... if you all know what i mean..???

i am going to do it sparky, i will do it! even if it does take some time. I'm so unhappy in the job i'm in now, so crafty me worked out that i could still be able to live if i worked part time,, so i went in work and asked to go part time to look after my dad! now i am working 20 hours per week. The machine at work needs some seriouse work doing on it but they are just running it in to the ground, i hated running that machine!! it's well stressful. so i look after my dad and work 4 hours a day and go to college 1 night a week. I feel so much better now i work part time i feel much happier, and it will give me time now to look into the things i realy want to do. I'm planning on updating my CV and going to a few fabrication shops.. I will work something out eventually...

thx gavuk!! i carn't wait to make things happen to finnish my course and get recognised. Carrisa has shown that it can be done and she has made her mark! She realy is someone to be proud of. One day it will be my turn, i'm just going to keep going with my head down and take 1 day at a time for now.

good luck wedgie, hope it all works out for you! i had an agency lad working with me for a couple of months who used to work in a factory in stockport, i think it was called fairy engineering. that was back when most factories had a brass band. he told me you could be the best welder in the world but if you couldnt play a musical instrument you didnt get the job!
