Would a stub axle be chrome plated or have some other coating?

I've been prepping my SJ413 parts for zinc plating and got to the stub axle recently. When I gave it a phosphoric acid dip the axle discoloured rather than disclosing clean metal like other parts. Could it be chrome plated or have some other plating?

The one on the left has had the acid dip, the one on the right just had a clean down.

Not normally....
They are precision ground for bearing fit.....
Have seen old hubs hard chromed and reground where nothing used was available....
Not a cheap trick tho...

I've seen a few that were electroless zinc, basically just a flashed layer to keep them perfect in storage.
