Worth checking your tyres manufactured dates

My daughter had booked in a tyre change for today on her new, to her caravan, not because the old tyres were worn out but because they were 7 years old. The tyre fitter removed the old tyre then said there was a problem because the tyres they had ordered and had just been delivered were 11 years old.

What reputable tyre supplier would stock much less sell 11 year old tyres?
Good advice on caravan tyre changing, 7 years is the maximum recommended age for a caravan tyre, general consensus is to change them at 5 year old.

If you're not wearing out your caravan tyres before they are too old then you're not using it enough!

Just thinking about caravan mileage the other day, we have a 10 year old Swift which we've had from new. It's been to France 5 times, England and Wales twice (from Northern Ireland) and heading to England and Wales again weekend after this one. (Sorry Scotland, we have visited your delights but not with this current caravan) and multiple weekend trips in our own fair country, its in Dublin at the minute with wife and no.2 son using it. I put it's 3rd new set of tyres on in March this year. I'd say the van has maybe covered a maximum of 13-15000 miles in those 10 years so the tyres still look as good as new coming off, but they do spend a long time sitting in one position. It's peace of mind really, there's hardly a summer weekend when travel news hasn't warned of delays caused by an overturned caravan caused by a tyre blow out.

I've just changed all the tyres on my Surf as they were 8 year's old, nothing wrong with any of them, they all had at least 5mm tread left but I just don't like old tyres.
I did make sure the new ones were actually new, made in late 2021

We should do what some other countries seem to do and have separate registrations for trailers, then they could be subjected to a yearly test like other vehicles.

a bit 2 thirds would be off the road and not just tires . i saw one on the side of the road made of woodchip pannels and the independent unit and wheel; was on the floor next to it with a bit of rotten board still on it

What was that just out of interest?

I know they have to be less than a 10 years old on a steered axle on anything over 3.5t, and any axle on a bus (I think - I don’t do buses!)

Oh I can't remember . Big old ex ambulance with a twin rear axle.

I had a blow out on a caravan tyre once. No idea how old the tyre was but the only reason I knew it had gone was that I could hear something making a stranger than normal noise behind me. I was doing a fair speed too as I was about to head up a lengthy, quite steep hill did like to get a good head of speed up on the approach! (I'm still talking legal speeds but made a point of getting there quickly).

I pulled into an entrance way at the top of the hill, swapped it with the spare and carried on my way.

And yet, as @Bobupndown mentions, you do often hear of more serious incidents. I wonder how many are genuinely down to a burst tyre though and not just muppetry!

My old bosses truck tyres were all over 20 years old so I told him he needed to buy at least 3 new ones. 2 for the front and one for the spare.

He only bought 2, so when one of the fronts get a puncture that's the truck needing recovery due to him being a tight git. He even kept the old ones as spares incase one of the rears need replacing.

He was quite surprised when i told him I was never going to drive it.

To be fair once youve seen a caravan after an accident on the motorway , tires look cheap , caravans must be like a blown up crisp bag full little bits , they seem to pop the same way .
Theres not a whole lot left to pick up after an accident , most of it needs a leaf blower to clear the road again

Yup, first thing I did when I bought our last caravan was have the 13 year old tyres replaced and fitted a TPMS system. Iirc it was £70 a tyre and about £50 for the tpms.

Picking up a new one next week, with 4 tyres to replace in 6 to 7 years time but it's fitted with tpms already

He probably would but the truck only does about 100miles a year.

Tubeless tyre wall damage during the journey such as kerbing it or a pot hole , then when the tyre has deflated enough it comes off the rim . seems to be high on the list of causes , seeing the ripped open van is the result.

How many of us shed draggers religiously check all tyres including the tow car before starting a journey each day like I do ?
