At last: a decent make of pillar drill for sale literally just around the corner from me.
Worth a gamble, or will the spares & the cost of converting it to run off my single phase supply be a headache ? Thanks

I've got the floor mounted version which I bought from a school. Converted it to 110v 3000 rpm motor (because I had one). Bottom oil seal tends to leak so I just top up with oil occasionally. Mine is 5 step pulley with 2 speed gearbox. Solid as a rock.

I've got a Progress #2. The #1 doesn't have a gearbox therefore no oil to leak out. I fitted a single phase motor (£50 off ebay), you may need to change the belt as well.

I haven't contacted the seller about viewing it. The ad says it was "taken from a workshop in working order" which is a bit of a grey description. I've a feeling that the seller may not have a 3 phase supply to demonstrate it working, hence the "it was working when I took it ... " comment.

You could still check for sideways play at the chuck, how smoothly the quill operates, general condition &c &c

True. I'm not familiar with what an acceptable level of play is in the chuck. No movement at all, or anything less than a rattle?
It looks like it's seen better days but a bit of TLC should tidy it up. He's asking £175. I was going to offer £150.

You shouldn't be able to feel any play.

£175 seems a bit on the high side, I paid £100 for mine and it needed a complete overhaul, but if it's on your doorstep that would increase it's value to you.

As there's no gearbox on the No1 an overhaul shouldn't be a problem as long as nothing is broken.

Seen, bought & collected. A bit of an awkward bugger to get out the trailer & into my workshop. A project for the darker nights when I have more time on my hands.

Nice one. Mine was put in the back of my car with a forklift - I dismantled it in situ to get it out.
