some liners drop in and have a seal, the dexta are press fit and you do have to have 'em honed after fitting.

Try Dunlop tractor spares , they supply sparex which my local agg engineer recommends, he's had issues with other kits as have others.

This all seems alot of work if it is only slightly worn, if the old girl used to start with no heat then she CANT be too badly worn. You hav'nt said why the head came off?

You may be right there Norm.
If the new liners need machining i will look at the option of tidying them up and fitting new rings. I'd rather do as much myself as i can. I'll measure the wear first; see how bad they are.

I debated taking the head off for a while. The gasket is damaged and was weeping, and given that the rest of the tractor is very worn and badly maintained i assumed the same could be said of the engine. Like i said before, i don't want to put it all back together then find problems. The cooling channels are really badly furred up and need some serious cleaning which would have been a mare to do when it was bolted ontop of the block.
The decision on the cylinders will dictate how much more i take apart.

Did it start with no heat of any description? honestly with a diesel that makes a massive indication of the engine condition. most old perkies HAD to have heat to start even perfect brand new ones in the summer! Just coz tractor looks rough does not say the engine is, perkins know/ knew how to make diesels to last even with massive amounts of abuse. from your description it sounds like she was run with no antifreeze to inhibit corrosion therefore damaging the gasket and corroding the waterways, you could end up spending loads on an engine that just needs a little tlc.

Just nipped out to have a look. Deffo no glow plug/heater system as the hole where the heater button goes had a mouse living in it. There was no wiring back to the heater plug which is knackered too so that hasnt worked for a long time.
Very poor use of antifreeze i reckon, three frost cracks in different water ways on the block which have been welded up. Anywhere where cooling water runs is well furred/corroded.

I've never started it myself from cold so don't know for sure. Deffo no heater system. Easy start?

Some diesels have ether/aero start as standard for extreme conditions it was a retro standard ford mod for old trannys with the york engines, leyland trucks, catapillars have it as standard. People say they get 'addicted' to it, THEY might but diesel DONT, that is bo11ocks all it does is raise the imflamabilty of the air drawn into the engine it works due to the low autoignition temperature of diethyl ether. and there is nothing wrong with its use, in moderation, in fact it can save wear to starters batteries etc The engine has to raise a considerable compression to start even with easy start.

correct, people also say that their engines get addicted to easy start because, " now it wont start at all without it" how can it its a lump of metal what they fail to realise is, the initial starting problem has got worse with time

we all know that, it doesn't get away from the fact once a diesel has been started with it, they tend to want it all the time.

Most of the problem is muppets emptying half a tin everytime, does them no good

Yeah brings back mems of my daily job as an apprentice starting a massive ex mod 4 wheeled 3ph genny on my own, to light/power one of the old ex raf hangers it had several ways of starting air, cartridge, clockwork startermotor(spring broken), 24v electric (no batteries) and a two man handle. No guesses as to what we used, yep the handle!! when it was freezing I used to have a cut down 45 gal, smash up some pallets/gas oil get a fire going let the flames die then slide the barbie under the engine
I made a budgey cage outa welding wire that used to hold burning tissue ontop the inlet manifold. Then came the tricky bit it had a decompessor lever you had to grap the handle with both hands crank like mad till you got the flywheel spinning then time it to take off one hand, slap the dc lever and you had one chance on it firing, usualy it did, if not then it was a brew then start allover again.
Funny though, I was off for a fortnight with a broken wrist when I came back there was a different genny there, (with hidden locked up batteries) apparently the old one had caught fire-----------hum ! wonder why?

im just looking at the time this posts where posted 2am do you people not go to bed. you should of maybe tested the engine before you took it apart to see when you to took the oil filler cap off to see if there is smoke coming out of it this would tell you your cylinders are worn do not buy pieces of ebay but go to argiline, dunlop tractor spares or vapormatic then you now its good quality material and not going to throw a rod when you rev it up.

Have been told of a story of a lad using oxygen in the inlet to help starting he didn't last long! I'm planing to fit a flame start to my 4000 to help cold starting there is most likely a place in inlet Manifold for one. The plug needs a fuel supply and a switched power supply

try agriline for you parts the old internationals used to have glow plugs in the blocks instead of the inlet manifold i would think glow plugs would of been better

I hate the stuff, bad news because its such a violent explosion it blows all the carbon away that's sealing, then it has low compression

that doesnt happen, where is the carbon sealing ?.
There is nothing wrong with it, if used properly.
That is why it is standard fitting on some vehicles !
