Workshop sweepings

After finishing "working" (read playing with welder & co) I always tidy up too.
So next time I can start right away, without strange pieces of strange things everywhere.
Plus, I use the "wait time after hot work" for something useful. I can't risk a fire in the garage!

Metal goes with metal, and the rest in the bin.

We can all improve. I just went out today and spent like £ 400 on stuff to make things better in the shop. All I intended doing was my normal clean down and tidy.

I also dumped 90% of my " might come in handy" bits from the shop onto the scrap pile outside.

You need a proper discussion / pitch to the boss- it's for the good of the work quality, speed and most importantly safety. I wouldn't work in a lot of the shops I have in the past just on this final point

Unfortunately my boss - well let's just say I can't say much about him due to the language filter. But he pays the bills (slowly).
Pitching things to him is usually a waste of breath. He took some hellish convincing to get oxy/acet and it only really happened as he ended up in a corner needing a job done. It's a farm for goodness sake where trying to straighten, cut and weld rust with nothing more than a stick welder and angle grinder is ridiculous.

He protested when I asked for a longer tape measure - 8m one - for when I'm making gates which are longer than 5m. Yes that's right, he argued over an item costing £4.99...

I sweep everything down the pit, then sweep it all to one end of the pit (it's quite a long pit) the once in a while I bring one of the little diggers in and muck out the pit!

I can get a barrow full of dust and mud every day off the floor of the workshop when I'm tracking machines in and out. It drives you mad after a while and the pit is a handy receptacle

ours get emptied weekly there was hell on when they said they would only empty every other week, if that was the case just fill bags with crap make sure no names in rubbish and dump em on roadside

Some of us have to work in a farm workshop where I tried to sweep up prior to making a gate and realised it was pointless - needs a spade to scrape the layer of mud/dirt off the surface!

My workshop is overlooked by a windy and dusty farm yard. Along with all the soot and ash from the forge I reckon I could fill a bucket once every two weeks.
I need to check out what's the score with the neighbouring businesses wheelie bins, or the farmer's domestic bins because I haven't got any of my own so outside my workshop doors is a small mountain of sweepings.
Looking forward to getting my MIG up and running & not having to deal with the ends of used up rods.

If he ain't got the cash it won't last if he has and won't spend it then he never will
Look after number one and keep safe

I think it suits me to be there at the moment which is why I am - guess that applies to all of us for varying reasons.
I'm sure the cash isn't in short supply, it's just his arms which are too short to reach the deep pockets. Unless it's to show off to his hunting mates of course...

As to staying safe I think I'm OK - and yes I did get that dangerous pit boarded up.

Farmers breed stock, they work for years to increase the quality....their fathers also breed into them, the tight stubborn, my way is best gene. Just the way it is.

What do you do with your workshop floor sweepings, especially when it contains sharp or non-biodegradeable nasties?

Everything all in to wheelie bin not fussed its not mine soon as goes in to cart, play em at their own game.

I remembered that one. It's more anyone can come and go and people leaving stuff in there that concerned me
It's not like you might always see them leave it and what it is

The 25l petrol drum (ordinary liquid container, not a proper fuel one) is the one which I really get very annoyed about.
Not what you want to see a meter away from where you're welding and grinding.

I once saw an empty drum of dewatering oil take out a partition wall. Not sure what an empty petrol drum could do but it's likely a lot worse.

This is my point really it's just not ok to use the space for other things when the guys are not likely to be correctly versed in the risks
