Workshop storage bins/drawers

Hi all,

We badly need some storage solutions at the workshop, stuff is just piled up or in boxes that don't stack properly. Things like grinding/sanding discs, brushes, large fasteners (or many small fasteners), wire wheels etc etc, basically stuff that is just too big or we have too much of for conventional organiser drawers.

The obvious solution are the plastic bins on louvre panels but there are 2 problems with them, a) they are open to dust and debris and it gathers up and makes a mess, I know that versions are available with lids but that bring me nicely to problem b) they are bl00dy expensive! (or the cheaper ones don't do decent size ones with lids)

Ideally I would like a big version of the little organiser drawers, something with a drawer size of about 150x240x125 or bigger, think big enough to get a scotchbrite pad in.

I saw this and thought that looks great (if flimsy!), until I realised that the stated size was for the whole unit, not per box.

Everything seems to either be far too small (organiser drawers units) or far too big (storage drawer unit)

Any ideas?

can you not get a cheap grey metal office cabinet and put the louvre panels in for bins to attach, door shut, dust free and easy access.

That is a really good idea but we don't have the space for a cabinet like that, I'd like to utilise my existing shelving and it's a bit pricey doing it that way.

Id really like to spend less than 50 quid on 10 or so "compartments".

Another option that ive seen is to fix some heavy plastic sheeting to the shelving then weigh it down at the bottom with some tube, make it in sections wide enough so you can poke your hand through to get what you want, when stocking up shelves it can be rolled up out of the way.

Saw this solution at a place where they were doing some heavy duty sanding on fibreglass, they had all THIER abrasives stored like this

put all the stuff for sale in the for sale section.
and sell it all to other members.
then you wont have a problem with everything stacked up

I like those really useful boxes, they look very sturdy, office sizes unfortunately and a bit out of my budget.

Really a slightly better version of this would be ideal. It is occasional use, were not a business so it doesn't have to be mega sturdy industrial.

Plastic boxes degrade & get attacked by numerous liquids linbins type don't.
Sales have those metal stores rack slide out boxes for sale quite often & cheapish

I have a very old steel drawer unit, about 4 ft high and 5ft wide. Has multiple drawers, and it came with dividers to separate drawers for small fasteners or anything along those lines. Only ever seen one for sale, but I guess its the type of thing to be found at closure auctions of old industrial premises? About the best thing I have ever had for storing smallish parts, and if its possible to find one shouldnt be a lot of money...........

There's about 20 of those at the architectural salvage place near me

I would get hold of one if price is right..............they are very useful, and great for tidying up a good deal of odds and end type parts.

if you're on the hunt for cheap storage ideas, try 20 litre drums. Over here they're commomly used for pararafin, and you''ll quite often see two or three at the roadside bins during winter. I pick them up, and cut the side out of them, instant drawers/bins... ok, not pretty, but they do the job, and they're free.

don't know how common they'll be over the water though, but might give you more options.

That's half the problem. I think £20 is fine, I'd if happily paid a bit more, for an old mismatched filing cabinet. But these fashionable types want to paint them and put them in their house which pushes the price right up.

I'm Scottish and my mum is a Yorkshire lass so im tighter than a ducks ****!

Lidl's used to do them on a regular basis, but haven't seen them for a couple of years.

If you've an Ikea nearby, have a look at these http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/10251045/. The drawers are a bit weird (you fold them up from a pressed steel sheet), but I've had a couple for years ...very useful.

Had a look on the ikea website but probably dismissed it as chipboard.
