Workshop Racking

When we did the extension to my workshop pretty much everything that was in my old big she'd was taken through into the area which will now be the storage area. I also have another area which use to be a seating area but is now full so the plan was to build some decent racking to store everything that isn't used regularly and leave room along one wall for the pillar drill, lathe etc. Photo attached of the room.

My current plan is to build a timber frame and use pallets as the shelves. Anyone recommend what size timber would be decent enough and economical as I will have to buy it. I was thinking 65 X 40 is normally pretty cheap.

id use 3x2 scant wood as strong enough for shelving dont forget your internal shelf strengtheners

unless you can get racking cheap up there

with racking more weight can be put on it but with less uprights

this is what id do in yours

from the left side door to the other side door build a smaller shelving no larger then 24" forward of the wall from floor to ceiling

take note of the size of boxes you will be using or want to use

the far wall id build another shelving pallet racking size floor to ceiling height

gives you 2 good shelving areas to stack on

try to angle it towards the meter 2ft down to 1ft otherwise getting car out might be a problem

Mine are 3x2 c16, with 1.2 between uprights and about 700 deep. Shelf base is wayrock flooring I had left over.

I’ve used the cheapest PAR timber B&Q had few years back. It’s the stuff they have stacked up and less than 3 quid a length. Yes it took ten mins to find some straight bits. Used flooring chip board for the shelves. Been going about 8 years now.

It’s rock solid

i used scaff boards ripped into 3 equal widths, then glued back to back to make 3x3s for the uprights.

rip into 2 equal widths to get 4.5x1.5 beams.

i pay around £8- £10 for new 13ft boards - cheaper for 2nd hand.
that works out around £1.50 for a 2m 3x2

and its decent timber: better than b&q twisty noodles

Often get decent metal racking on bidspotter cheaper than getting to wood etc. I got 20 bays for my unit last year for less than 500....over 8gtand new.... So might be worth looking at as an option?

CLS can be hit and miss but i go to B+Q and have a sort through to get the best ones, I have used it for lots of jobs so i always have quite a few left over, I have made plenty of shelves from it normally i glue it side by side and add some screws about 4 inches long to hole it till the glue sets.

I buy my timber from the local merchants. Seems to be better quality that the big national DIY places! + I normally get a good value for money deal

I feel its best to sort the storage containers first then build the racking to suit. I was lucky I managed to find some good second hand stuff very cheaply

had this problem / discussion last year. agree fully with @pcwizme

by the time I'd have bought the wood, spent days/ weeks etc bulding it, then painting or treating it.... compared to buying secondhand ex storage racks it was a simple conclusion. I spent just over 600 quid buying reclaimed storage racks / shelves etc, racked out the whole stores and had left over... all galvanised, ready to go clip together and it was installed the same day more or less, as against probably 1/2 to 2/3 of that cost just for the wood, then adding the cost of fixings / paint / treatment / time etc...

might be worth looking at some of these office furniture places, they often have storage racks etc secondhand. in my case it was a no brainer as they say. especially if you've a dodgy knee, easy solution.

When I bought my workshop it had all industrial racking along one wall. At the time it just used up all my space so got rid of it. Found a guy selling some Dexion racking near here so will go have a look on the weekend, probably need a bit of modifying but should do the trick hopefully.

is there no still a place up the back of greenwell road, east tullos? Used to be years ago, don't know if it's still there, used to do all sorts of recycled office furniture etc
