A 50t anything is not going to be cheap or easy to come by.
If you can find a single acting cylinder most have internal return springs so no need for additional ones or a return circuit with double acting.
For my 25t press I used a long stroke single acting enerpak style cylinder which has a threaded section at the extending end. I then manufactured a nut to screw onto the cylinder so I could mount it to the press frame. It wasn’t a common thread but easy to make on the lathe.

I walked into my local ram repair place and asked for an old ram I could use to make a ram or two, told the bloke what I was doing and he showed me their recently emptied old ram grave yard, but there were several suitable rams that could be cut down.
Then he showed me to the rack new ram tube and ram offcuts and said take what you want. But he did sort of guide me, I left with the makings of multiple rams.
He wasn't so helpful with seals, I decided what I was going to do and went back to get some seals. Seals before pistons sounds the way to do it, he wanted to do it the other way, i.e I make the pistons and he would find the seals to suit!
So the ram tube and ram has sat here for 20+ years, the ram was still OK last time I looked at it-it's in a cardboard tube- the ram tube is honed and I can see traces of rust in it.
Double action sounds reasonable on a press?

This is the type of set up ideally, not really to fussed on the price (as long as i dont have to remortgage for it!)
Possibly if i could find one second hand that isn't completely knackered, but really could do with it sooner rather than later.

Extremely useful I might add.
Our 100 tons has this feature but we don't use it at all, but if you unscrew the ram end and you put an hook you can pull with half of the tonnage.
Despite the double acting ram, if you take it apart you'll find a beefy spring in it to support the weight of the ram
We could use this just to raises the table but it can be used for a lot of things.
But the thing which is in my opinion the most problem solving and time saver is the ability to move the ram left to right on the press.
This will help a lot saving time setting up work, reducing the accuracy required to place for example a bent shaft perfectly below the ram.
If I'd find myself building a shop press I'd certainly implement this feature.
And a chain hoist free to move everything around the press that's another time and potentially life saver as you can work a lot safer with this holding the work on the press (both for properly alignment and in case something goes wrong)
