Workshop Lighting LED Equivalent to 5ft Fluorescent

I need to plan lighting for the new workshop space. I don’t really know how to estimate what will be needed, but I can make a reasonable guess by looking at the garage which is lit by two five foot T8 fluorescents 58W each.

What would be an LED equivalent, giving the same lighting effect as one of those 58W fluorescents?

Recommended makes/models/suppliers would be appreciated as well.

I changed all my 5' fluorescent units to the highest output available led tube replacements at the time, its nearly ok but as these fail I will be replacing with the white light versions. How big is the area you are lighting.

TLC Electrical are my goto for LED Battens. Branded Knightsbridge, I have 20 odd of them in my workshop and I'll tempt fate now by saying I've not had a single failure in 8 years.

I find it's about 2:1, a 26w LED is about the same in terms of light output, as (possibly slightly better than) a 58w Fluorescent, at least in my installation.

A 5 foot 58W T8 fluorescent tube gives out 5200 lumens so look at the lumens rating when searching for a LED replacement.

Or you could get technical and use a lighting calculator, generally a workshop would be 70 lumens per square foot for general lighting and 105 lumens per square foot for detailed work areas (task lighting).

I'd recommend looking at the flat panels, give a good light and would be roughly equivalent. Something like this (just as an example)

That's where I'm not sure about direct comparisons, the 5' LED linked above quotes 3000 lumens for example. But is some of the fluorescent output wasted as it's directed upwards?

Interestingly that comes out not a million miles off my wild guess. The new area is just under 9 x 6, say 50 sq.m or 500 sq.ft. I'm treating it as three bays each roughly the same size as my garage, and my wild guess was three 58W equivalents per bay. That works out around 90 lumens per square foot.

I might start with just three, see how that looks lighting one bay.

That would be the lower power one (26W)? - they will give less light than the fluorescents. The double fitting (50W) is 5000 lumens

The 5' (63W) fitting that I linked to gives 7500 lumens (and also a decent spread of light).

I said above that you need roughly the same power for LED as fluorescent - GOOD LEDs give ~25-30% more light than the same wattage of fluorescent, but the distrubution probably wont be as uniform as a fluorescent (depends on the design of the luminaire), so you may need a few more lumens for general illumination. There's nowhere near the difference between LED and fluorescent wattage as there is between LED and incandescent.

I had 4 twin tube 5 foot fluorescents in my 30ish sqm garage.
I've replaced them with these
10 X Lumineux LED Panel Light 600x600 28W 6000K
I've found that 2 of these panels roughly equals the light output of the twin tube 5 foot fluorescent. (Less for dirty hand prints...long story).

If your working on vehicles I would suggest fitting some of the panels vertically, low down on the walls.
