some people do advise to use chipboard ive stripped many a dormer roof over the years with the usage of chipboard sometimes before 5 years old the chipboard just brakes away in your hand and has to be renewed

There's still two blocks to go above the top edge of the joist hanger which was put in after the wall was built & allowed to cure /dry , using a 4" angle grinder. Then the hanger backs that go to the wall were drilled &7 plugged to the wall with several 50 mm sheradized flat head screws. I made up a simple water gauge out of 6 mtrs of clear reinforced 1/2 " plastic tube & two bottles of blue food dye mixed with a litre of water , so that all hangers were at the same height.
Once all four hangers were in place the lengths of joist were carefully measured several times to get a tight fit . They were cut square and tapped into place .. none were too sloppy , one had to be power planed off for 3 mm . When put in place the joists were screwed to the fixed hangers .

The depth of the joists allowed me to hide two sets of step ladders in their depth, using a bar and two 4 inch square tubes of aluminium that were hole cut to take the support bar .. one of these aluminium blocks was opened up so the bar can be lifted in & out upwards ..the retaining bar is a quality fit across the width of the internal measurement between the joists.

I put a transom on hangers across the ovecroft ,above my 42 inch bed lathe so it is in handy reach . On it hangs callipers , a swarf removing tool and two portable lights that are angled down onto the lathe bed in a way that they don't dazzle me whilst I'm stood at it.
These two transom hangers are let into the top of the joists & screwed on to them . so the 2,4 . x 1.2m 19 mm marine ply shelving board sits flat on it .
You need to do this before you put the deck board on , the deck board is also screwed on with four counter sunk screws on each side.
Like I said the transom bars can take my weight with the lathe and a 2 tonne chain hoist hanging on it . Handy to lift the whole machine when I put it on swivelling lockable hard nylon 100 mm castors that were welded to a bespoke frame I made up for the job.

Final picture how it looks loaded with stuff . the washer & dryer are four feet behind the rear edge of the overcroft to allow access to the shelving above them
Those shelves are made with joists also and screwed down to the support timbers . the bottom shelve ( also joists ) is blocks set on a wide damp proof membrane that also runs in one piece up the wall at the back and it's built up to knee height before the shelving was put on .

All electrics , lighting & plumbing were put in place right after the overcroft was installed but before the heavy shelving arrangement was installed to make it it a lot easier to do .

its flooring chipboard if your going to use that on the roof you can do so if you dont want to spend anymore money on it

just seal it twice with bitumen paint for waterproofing if the first coat misses anything the second coat will catch it

I suspect you will need 15 litres of it for doing the roof in 2 coats before you add your next layer on top of it 25 litres of it is around 50.00

I'm only short on money everything else is supplied in plenty ......apparently

I'm 5 @ 10 " on a good day , the lowest point of the overcroft is six foot four inches from the floor, it's the angle that I took the picture whilst I was supported on my crutches . The back wall is about 8 feet behind the front overcroft joist . The top of the machines are about 4 foot from the floor .

as long as its 16" to the centre of the joists your fine to put your joists on the roof oh and its that triangle on your tape measure or a white box on some tape measures lol

insulation is marked at 12" and 16" on a roll

What I meant was after I have fitted 14 joists 16 inches apart I will have enough 6 x 2 joists left over to cover the entire roof with them laid 90 degrees to the joists like big thick floor boards. Is this a feasible option instead of 19mm chip board.

Natural timber is more likely to twist/warp/move than a more stable engineered alternative - but personally I'd avoid the chipboard...

if you have bought the chipboard flooring then use it theres no point in using the thick 6x2 joists for the roof your just adding weight to it

as the chipboard maybe damaged the shop may not take it back so use them up

if you really want to add a top coat in osb then buy the thinner 9mm osb board and install over the chipboard if you cant afford it then just use the chipboard for the roof its fine unless you get a leak in your roof coat

i have seen chipboard last as long as the roof dosnt leak if it does it could be 5 years or longer before the water leaks through its really the luck of the draw how long it lasts

just the next time do it in osb

if the 6x2 are still full length you can send the wood back ot the yard under a returns with a discount on the amount and you would get more money with the 6x2s

The thing is all the wood was free. So it's not a case of taking it back.

A lot if my money is sitting in the backroom in the form of bolts but I can't even get in there yet to send to peopke who have already paid for theirs..

I need to get the roof on before I kill the wife who keeps moaning and throwing things in amongst the bolts.... (getting stressed now).

my advice early on in the thread is dont use the chipboard for the roof but no cash and plenty of chipboard is use it on the roof add another layer of osb on top if you dont want to buy 3/4" osb boards then use the thinner osb boards

chipboard is still better than an open roof though id seal it and sheet it up then get stuff shifted so i could earn cash again to get the materials needed to finish it off

ive done the building trade most of my life from 12 year old to 46 done years of dormer roofs that people used chipboard hence the reason why i said dont use chipboard as had to rip all of it off and replace with osb
balancing on beams 3 floors high ripping crappy chipboard roofs off isnt the best of subjects as we both know full well roofman

128 quid for 8 sheets of OSB and as my EPDM will not be here until after the weekend I will use that cash and crack on.

the one thing that you could use the chipboard for is for shelving inside of your shed ukracer instead of metal shelving easy replaced if get wet all you need is 3x2 scant for the framing and thats cheap enough as well unless you got a chainsaw then cut up some of your 6x2

we use osb to board up shops and windows and doorways when they have been broken into the job im just on at moment had fire damage to whole house osb boards was up for a full year until repairs was carried out new windows and patio doors double glazing was fitted to them

the osb boards are now on my steel / osb storage for burning wood

in patches until i can get some plywood 3/4" thick that ive just got this weekend and has been built since 23/6/2015 in all that rain so has taken some wet weather against it and still the same now

I made my decision and will be getting boards delivered tommorow but I started to crack on with 12 inch spacing and have found that it's almost impossible to drive the screws in near straight. I have also started fitting twisted strap as it seemed to provide the best of both worlds. But I can see the roof lining won't fit right. (That's the use I have planned for the chipboard )as I have loads of steel shelving.
