Problem is that if you don't warm the air then your dehumidifier will bottom out at approximately 65 - 70%RH at 7°C since that equates to a dew point just above freezing.

Warm the air and you'll be able to recover more moisture.

Think it was about 7c the other day before I put the heating on. It’s not heated when I’m not there.

theres your problem if its cold theres no humidity for it to catch .warm the place up and it will fill in no time i can get a gallon a day out of our dehumidifier sat on the the landing

Leave it running 24/7 ? run it on high for a while and see how it comes down ?

burdekin you also have to consider is your workshop sealed which it isnt

therefore any damp will be found in the air or new air coming into the building

dehumidifiers work much better in a sealed area otherwise to a degree your floging a dead horse

it will work in your kitchen seated area but it can still pull air from your toilet area

wont work in your milling room or your storage room too much incoming air from there

if you buy some laths and fit 1" - 2"insulation board to those outside walls you would stop the heat hitting those walls

you wont stop damp rising but if you can keep the water off your walls you have a much better chance of keeping that wall dryer

needs redoing every 2 years and it does work

if you want o reduce the humidity with out heating you need a non refrigerant dehumidifier. Again not as efficient when cold as stated above. A desiccant wheel type recirculating the air inside your space with the regeneration damp air ducted outside.

Not all dehumidifiers are born equal.. if it doesnt have a defrost cycle to melt the ice on the coil, relying on ambient temp to melt the ice it can take a long time if the (ambient) temp is low.

as @jsf55 said, run it full wack until you see the condensate dropping off, you’ll find a happy medium where its running just long enough to remove sufficient moisture.

In winter mine needs emptied around 2wks, but if I go in more than twice a week, that drops to weekly.

One of the best options for desiccant dehumidification is a company called Munters - they have a lot of experience in Sweden where we have typically offered dehumidification rather than heating for simple storage facilities as you can prevent damage more effectively by reducing the RH.

I worked for them for 4 months when I first left the Merchant Navy. Doing things like drying pipelines ready for gas, holding conditions for blasting/ painting, drying out fire damaged and flooded properties, new buildings etc. I was severely ridiculed when I told friends I was going munting with munters
Many building management systems have them fitted in the air intakes upstream of any heating or cooling

It’s running flat out all the time at the moment I assume. A larger desiccant type would probably have been a better choice I think. I have sealant for outside so should get that done as that might improve things a bit, but it’s not bad I just wanted it dryer to minimise and rust.

burdekin it wont do much to be honest here

you need air for your wood stove this was created so that it went behind your wood stove within the boxing

all the rest is sealed up in there



the only alternative to keep water out is water seal this will get rid of loads of water in your walls therefore reducing the water amount

best off getting water seal in spray it on your outside walls, seal that input air at back of the stove remember if you block it unseal it before stove is used and dry it out from there after
