I bought this Yamaha F4 new around 2002, its mainly been used as a backup or powering a dinghy occasionally. My brother has used it for the last few years and he reported to me that the oil was going creamy! He did an oil change and the same!
So I picked up the engine and decided to give it a checkover.
Head off:
Plenty of salt build up in the cylinder water jacket.
Cleaned it up, can certainly see some corrosion:
Corrosion at the 12:00 position, though no white smoke, so not sure if the head gasket is at fault.
Head seems ok:
though plenty salt cleaned out the cooling passages.
At least its a light enough engine to work on.
The brackets for the carrying handles did not comply!
So out with
and the gas torch, got one out whole, the other two have to resort to:
Getting there:
So ordered up a head gasket, rocker gasket, inlet manifold gasket, thermostat and gasket plus an impeller kit.
And helicoiled:
The joys of working on machinery exposed to salt water.
