Work light?

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good portable work light for working on the car and welding etc?

I had two of these but dropped them about 1ft from the floor in the car to the concrete and they broke. They also got hot very quickly after they broke and could have been a fire if I wasn't aware: http://www.screwfix.com/p/defender-e709150-2d-work-light-38w-230v/78401

I use one of these. It works very well and has a a few magnets and hangers on it for fixing to bulkheads, etc. It's very bright too and it has a lithium ion battery inside to power it. Mine was black, not the turquoise coloured one but they are exactly the same. It has a torch beam or flood setting on and you just cycle the switch between off/torch/wide beam flood.

I now use the same type as Parm but the 5W ones.
I have bolted a magnet to the base which makes it very handy but a bit of a job to get it back off.

I've not used it for working on the car but can't see why it won't be effective/usefull

I picked this up as an impulse buy, so far it's been used during a couple of late night out door soirees. Run for around 5hrs on each occassion

I think they are only good for around 3 or 4 hours constant use.

Corded may be different but for cordless I only go to Snap-on now for work lights, as I'm lucky to get more than a couple of months out of most before they're flickering.
SO do do a cordless one with I think 8 hour battery life, I seem to recall it was around £100 + VAT but I could be a good bit off as I wasn't really interested in that one I was being shown, it was designed for the heavy user and I wanted smaller.

I use a 5 ft fluorescent tube light made for 110v with a transformer.
Either cable tie it to the bonnet hook above my head or stand it upright for vehicles and then position it however for welding.

Pick this the other day, On offer at TP as the box was damaged, £6.

Got it home, not bad, I dropped it of work top and bent the mounting bracket.

I've got a Mikita led 18v one that uses the same batteries as my cordless drill, was about £30 (without battery etc.). Super bright and is holding up well to working under the car and being knocked around. Light enough to use as a torch when out walking in the evening too. Well impressed.

I had the one xmetal suggested and it had loads of abuse fixing cars/fabricating. i must have dropped it 100+ times. its only gone because i lost it and got 'given' a non magnetic one which is a pain.

I have the screw fix LED one. Its good but gives you no warning that the light is going to go off and you can't use it while its charging but they are OK for the price and the smaller one is good for underneath a car.

ive still got the old wood inspection lamp and it still works

garage fella has the led versions at his garage and ive already used them so far already they are good and come in handy as well

These things last no time at all
Not buying another unless I totally have to and I can charge its full cost as an extra into the job

Personally those small magnetic stick on multi led jobbies that run on regular batteries are a better buy if bright enough

If you really shop around these are available for about £13-- I have one currently get approx 7 Hrs off 1 charge, charging options 12V off the car or 240V. Mines the 10W version

Cordless is magic, we used it at the weekend, By the time we sort out carrying a 110V trf, finding a 240v plug--very rare on site,110V leads, lamps etc, we nearly had the job done. An unbelievable amount of interest is always shown by Management and workers when we take ours in, we have 3 now!! Biggest problem is security but like all tools now you take care and precautions. be one of the best £14 you spend.
I`ll second the Miners headlamp. I have one, it was a £1 in the pound shop!! again a brilliant piece of kit. Available for a few pence

I use a 1w led miners headlamp type, very bright up to 80 hrs use, I use rechargeable AAA bats, recharge them in the cordless phones. Also do that for the tv remotes as well.
When it's on your bonce you can work without shadows and blinding yerself when picking up tools,

I've gone for a couple of 240v 20w led worklights like the rechargeable ones. I thought a corded one will be better for me so I don't need to remember to charge them.
