A few options thanks.
Two pairs sounds like a solid plan. I might go for one dealer and one lace up. I used to not mind wet feet but have become a sensitive chap as I hurtle through middle age.
I did look at some army surplus ones but I really need safety shoes. I used to exclusively wear skate shoes unless forced and had so many near misses I feel like I have used my nine life's up.

Oh, I know. Got a pair of what I thought an excellent bargain, only to find the soles were leaving lumps behind on floor.
Unfortunately, it had been months after I bought them that I started wearing them in earnest.
I wear steel toe capped dealer boots.
After nearly having an off on a motorcycle due to my lace getting caught the laceless design looked like a good idea.
They are very comfortable and not a sloppy fit.
You want a boot with a stitched welt to get the most life out of them.

Another vote for rigger style boots here.
Jallatte Jalaska (composite toe version of the Jalnevis) are the only slip-on boots I'll wear, they're properly shaped at the heel and instep, so paired with a proper supportive insole, they naturally grip the foot so they don't slob about, but can still be kicked on and off easily...
Like slippers for the outside!
For winter use composite toe is so much warmer than steel, I'm never going back.
I actually find good quality rigger style boots [made with decent leather so thr shaft stands up on its own rather than floppy] a lot easier to put on with no hands than dealer boots.
Unless I'm wading about in mud or water tend to slip my jeans/cords over the top of the boot in the same way the americans wear cowboy boots.
I often wonder why no-one has made a safety boot along similar lines.

I had a pair done once at Richmond - new rand/sole/footbed/laces - came back with a tin of wax. Mine came back with a "higher rand" as the leather was worn where the old rand was. Cost slightly more than half a pair of new boots... I did get "another life" out of the pair of boots - but not sure I would do it again (just buy new).

Docs are a fashion shoe now. They are made abroad and the quality isn't what it was. The profit on them must be huge.
I think it's so they look less like a work boot and more like a casual boot and you can wear them anywhere, including pubs that would normally ban work clothes. Hence the rise of the 'safety trainer' footwear genre too. A lot of these boots/shoes are pretty nice looking footwear imo.

A quick Google reveals you can still get them made to order for £135-£350/pair, by two UK bootmakers William Lennon & Co. and Bleachers & Co.
The quality of DM's (even the expensive UK made ones) is also dire now despite the price being hugely inflated.
If you liked DM's, then the best choice nowadays would be to buy boots from NPS Solovair in Wollaston...
They made them under contract for DM until the majority of manufacturing was offshored. Thanks to being a worker co-op NPS managed to survive losing the DM contract and have kept selling the same high quality air-cushion sole boots, getting a very good reputation for quality and durability.
I bought our lass a pair of their classic 11-eye boots about 5 years ago as a Christmas gift after that year's set of DM's died...
To date they have some fairly significant sole wear, but the uppers are still in great condition despite being in use about 5 times as long as it would normally take her to completely wear out a pair of modern DM's

It is impossible to find a slip on safety shoe at least my size, ( 12-14 ).
I guess the paradox being you can't have/call a shoe "safety" and " slip on" in the same sentence.

I managed to get an early finish from work so popped into our local garden centre/horsey place, Charlie’s.
On their website they didn’t show any stock of the ones I wanted in my size (Hard Yakka Outback) but I decided I’d go and have a look at them at least. Turns out they did have my size, but before I found a pair of size 8’s I thought I’d try the other Hard Yakka ones - Banjo (I marginally preferred the look of the outback, but these also looked OK). They were amazingly comfortable, with a gel insole as standard.
Then after a bit of rummaging around the boxes I found a pair of my size outback - expecting them to feel the same I was actually surprised that, although comfy they didn’t seem as snug as the banjo.
After a bit of umming and aaahhing I decided to go for the banjo ones - they were cheaper (works money so not really an issue in this case -£67 as opposed to £82 for the outback style) and they were so much more comfy.
Looks wise having seen them I think I might actually prefer them anyway…
I’ll do a proper review after I’ve got some wear in but first impressions seem very good. Pics to follow…

Yes - though you can get non steel toe cap ones as well.
On their website the black non steel toe cap seem quite a bargain at £44 but only certain sizes (9.10,12 and 13 I think). Reduced from £98.
Just been wearing mine round the house and they are very comfy.
