I haven’t used them yet but I am fitting oak veneered doors throughout the house so I thought I’d better invest in some half decent chisels. Hopefully they’ll be ok, I like the fact that they come with a sharpening stone, guide/jig and a neat little case, ideal for me. I’m no carpenter but they look ok for a relatively cheap set.

Never understood chisel snobbery
Flatten the back well get a good bevel and micro bevel and one chisel cuts as well as another.
Some are better steel than others.
Some hold an edge better than others.
As long as it does the job in front of you and there within you budget.
I'm happy to keep buying Irwin's.
Out of the box the backs are flat and they are well ground
They hold an edge and I can beat 7 shades out of it with a claw hammer
I could spend 5 times as much on a set of chisels with nice wooden handles and leave them in the shed looking nice for fine work or I could buy a tool I can use and abuse and replace as required.

Agreed, but then again a carpenter may question why I need expensive spanners!
I nearly bought a set of Irwin chisels myself, the metal striking cap appeals to me with my rough mechanic ways but the Bahco set with the stone etc. was better value for money IMO.

There are some good cheep chisels out there. On the other hand there are some bloody terrible chisels.
When I was heavy involved in a Tool charity we soon got to recognise the terrible ones.
Yes, hone a cutting angle on and a few blows and it is gone.
One of the best cheep sets was a TK Max one, the steel was good for the average use, but the handles failed. Combined with a Argos set, were the steel was terrible but the handles were good.
We made a good set.
But chisels are like all tools, you get good and you get bad.
You also get those who will swear blind that theirs are the best and others of tosh.

But this beast is my own ,made from lorry springs,with heat treatments,they were for green oak framing boys,pity at the time couldn’t get decent size Python handles,think the boys that used them made their own with twine.

I agree with you in that even cheap chisels can be sharpened nice and function perfectly well, I don't own any "nice" chisels unfortunately, but id really like some nice ones, there's just more satisfaction from using excellent tools.
You dont need expensive tools, you need functional ones.
They can be the latter without being the former. (I'm looking at you snap-on)
But as above. Satisfaction from nice tools.

Any offer i cant refuse.
As a boatbuilder i have a fair collection of chisels, There is a set of red handled Marples, Soft but take a good edge, plus a few blue & black handled ones, Much harder steel. I use these for taking apart work where i might hit a screw or nail.
Then there are the nice ones, Many can tell a story as to where they came from or who once owned it, most of these blokes are gone now. Some are my dads & others i have gotten out of skips or boot fairs & reconditioned.
Names like Mathesion of Glasgow, James Howarth & Sons John bull brand, Sorby, Addis, Dixon, Marples & others i cant remember.
I also have a few fine Japanese chisels & they are nice but If you chip the edge you are full of woe!
