saw this in a customers garden ,was intrigued,although its rotten in the core.
Nobody knows what wood.

I can only presume it's an apple tree but with a twist!

Jeez, you ignoramouses... It is a multi-start tapered mahogony thread, used for squeezing gronicles. Just the rest of the bits aren't there. Lots of them around here, but, due to a shortage of gronicles, they squeeze grapes with them.
Must say, I always get a slight twinge in the gronicles when I see one.
