Wooden step pulleys, strong enough?

I'm in need of a few step pulleys and standard pulleys. I can't jusify the cost of them at the moment. I haven't found a decent carboot that has stuff like this.

I did find a site that a guy made his own from wood. (;ink further down)

I'd like to ask, anyone know if they'd be strong enough. They are mainly for a couple of sanders i've started making, disc/belt and spindle sander and i'm also needing a few pulleys for an old metal lathe i've got.I've a wooden lathe to make them, if needed

Wooden pulleys have been used for donkeys. Not uncommon to come across old flat belt ones made out of hardwood. A decent ply or a hardwood, either should do fine.

Hi, I wouldn't have thought Ply was the best material to use because the taper of the belt could split the laminations apart once loaded up. Also the grain of a solid piece should run inline with the axis not across for the same reason.

I made a pipe bending die from ply and it worked,
I have just remembered my vavle grinder has a wooden pulley, it uses a flat fabric belt I guess it's original.
