Popped the hops off, as I found out some one had glued the staves together. Or used the glue to seal the leaks.

My research informed me the ice should be mixed with salt, as it lowers the temperature.

Soaking in water, at least 48.

Our re-enactment group has two firkins. They indeed leak like a very leaky thing If they are left for any length of time. We usually put them outside when it's raining with a hosepipe in the bung hole with the flow adjusted to compensate for the amount of water that goes out. I would be using a band rather than a rod, it won't dig in the wood and be able to slide down to tighten it up. BTW a Barrel is a size of cask.
