woodburner plus fan fume extractor: would this work?

you okay lads. would this work ?
small amount of welding : about 1 hour per day
the extractor fan will push all fumes including smoke from wood stove out of exit.
The mini wood stove is one of those tiny units off ebay 4KW

You don't want to push towards the burner, should always pull but even then it's not going to take much to make it burn very hot and fast, as it is designed to be natural draught

i dont want to be drilling 2 massive holes in the wall.
what about these design below; changgin the T to a Y junction so it runs along it.
The amount of weld fumes will be very minimum. It is mostly tack welding; welding box.

dont combine a logburner into anything else, it causes back flow and sooting problems, stick the extract from welding area out of a window if need be like an old style tumble drier,

Your diagram will cause a load of bother.

Without the fan, it would add in a load of air and reduce the draw though the stove (provided by the thermal difference in the stack)

That would be bad enough. With the fan, you're going to end up (probably) blowing smoke etc out the front of the burner.


If you want extraction, could you burn the stove hard and use that to extract gas from the workshop?

thats illegal dont use it

each has there own system to external

the only system i am aware of that used an internal pipe within the chimney used steam to start the flow through the last part of the chimney and that used speed to help draw through the system to the chimney

so basically keep both systems seperate with there own EXIT pipes out of the garage.

and a air purifying unit within the room.

If you have any extraction in a room with a live fire/stove, you are going to pull smoke, fumes, gases into the room if you do not have an air inlet. If fact, under BS8303 I don't think you are allowed to do so unless the stove has a direct air supply from outside?

But a bathroom fan pulling air through a filter, while removing air from the area in front of the filter, isn't going to do much about your welding fume.

So then how you keep a garage warm and weld in it at the same time?

Warm the room up first ; then switch off wood burner before welding and then turn extractor on to get rid of fumes.

I bet a hoover motor would do the trick but not sure how long it would last.or one of these; @ about £200

this was on my shed going through the roof



now that flue had an 1" around the flue of air as long as that flue pipe remains sealed theres no rule of thumb that you cant air gap around the flue pipe to also use as an extractor

a note has to be said that when that flue pipe is heated from the stove it will draw some air out of the shed

the flexy is a flue LINER, it wont support itself properly and will end up leaking

im guna go with a clarke with those plastic 12" ducting and stick it out of garage door for the fumes.

for the wood burner will use some proper chimney pipe and drill a 125mm through wall.

so will warm garage up turn burner off. and then when welding use the clarke ventilation fan.

If im doing a decent amount of welding, the doors are open, I have fans that drag in cleaner air from outside at the rear of the garage, and blow it across my welding area.

I wear thick overalls and a decent face mask in my unheated garage.

I'm under no illusion as to the capabilities of my set up. The face mask is the biggest change. I don't come back in the house with clagged up nostrils, so I'm stopping some of the particles.

Sounds sensible to run the extractor out of an open door, they can shift a lot of air and in an otherwise reasonably well sealed shed, could end up drawing back through the burner chimney without good inlet area.
