woodburner adapter

morning lads i've bought an adapter for my woodburner to make the flue go from 5" to 6" but it's a bit tight to fit in the collar of the woodburner how do i make it smaller can i heat it up so it will shrink a bit or cut it with a 1mm disc and weld the seam what's the best way forward

Probarbly slit the reducer and fit with a large jubilee clip perhaps. Heating the ring may help but might still be too tight?

when you heat it, it expands, you would have to heat the collar if poss

If it is only small amount you could 'strap' the od of the adapter with a metre long length of wide 80 grit emery tape. It's suprising how much you can get off with abit of elbow grease, needs to be in a vice or clamped though, so you can keep pressure on the tape, also 'walk' the tape back n too along the the area to be reduced to keep it even.

it's not big by a lot but i dont want to tap it in because the collar is cast i have seen some with a crimp around the circumference would that pull the diameter in a touch i would sooner have it smaller so i can fill with stove rope and fire cement to make the seal

I have reduced the OD down a significant amount at the end of some LONG lengths of 2.5" pipes , using a hydraulic hose ferule crimping machine, but it would have to be a big un to do 6"!!!

There are pliers to crimp the smaller end to enter the bigger. A DIY version would be two bits of flat with a 5mm spacer between them held in the vice so they project one end. Then put the end of the tube over them and hit the outside with a cold chisel so it forms a 'V' between the bits of flat. Move the tube round a bit and repeat until the diameter is reduced enough to fit. Bung up any gaps with stove putty.

Is this rolled plate or 'solid' turned/forged unit?

it's only 1mm rolled steel i think the crimp idea will work thanks everbody

Oh yeh no probs or you could get a flap wheel in your drill and polish the ID of the stove collar?
