Bark on the trunk rather seems a bit hawthorny, or perhaps one of the snake-bark maples ?

Absence of visible lenticels - pores, for transpiration, rules a few of them out.

To me, the bark looks like connifer.
Cut a fresh slice of firewood from the stump and see what it smells like.

Conifer isn't hard even when seasoned?

It gets tougher, very dry pine can be a bit bouncy with a chainsaw

Rhododendron? Bark looks similar to some of our bigger trees and that can get really hard even when fresh despite effectively being an evergreen.

Definitely not conifer. It was a tree. Proper branches. Can't ever recall noting it in leaf, though I do seem to recall it budding. Reason I recall that is that it surprised me, looking at how forlorn that tree appeared.
