Wood Treatment

Not really into woodwork and my head is done in searching so bound to be someone here that knows.

I have bought a garden swing seat and want to treat it before I put it together, ensuring all areas are covered.

Its Meranti hardwood, which in reality is probably not great stuff and fast grown cheap imported wood but does look nice, has a bit of weight about it and is a nice finish, so better than I expected.

I intend to grease all the bolts so at the end of summer I can dismantle and store away until the next year.

Ideally I am looking for something to apply that is quick (watery), and not change the appearance too much.

Should it be an oil, a liquid preservative or what?

IMHO, oil. Definitely wouldn't consider anything which is "water based", if you go the preservative route.

Yeah I used water based on a garden shed, may as well have used just water....totally rubbish.

Teak oil will do the trick, and if you treat from new will keep it looking good. Foam brush works for me better than a cloth when applying.

Not.quick but when I'm doing bbqs wood I dismantle lay in a tray and let them soak for 30 mins each turning now and again

Probably would be worth soaking in a tray type thingy but because it's getting put away each winter and will only be out for the summer ( 3 days ) I don't think that amount of soak should be required...I hope

Just trying to give it a bit of a boost for weather protection and to stop it going shabby fast.

Have a look at danish oil, used on lots of exterior applications.

Ok..so we have:

Danish oil... Googles as very good although leaning towards top quality use/items
Linseed oil...Takes ages to dry.
Teak Oil...Know nothing about but googles as a mix of Danish/Linseed and or Tung oil
Garden furniture oil... Would hope the main brand stuff was ok.

I may be looking too deep into this, it's only a cheapish garden seat I suppose but at least the advice has steered me away from the watery preservative chemical they had in the shop which the guy said was great....£22 a small tin, I think he meant to say...great profit for him

I will have another look tomorrow and if the garden furniture oil has mostly the above as ingredients then it's a goer

I've had great results with Rustins / liberon Decking oil.

I bought a 10 litre tin 7 years ago, it was expensive.

All garden furniture stays in the garden all year round. Quick jet wash at the start of the season and then a quick coat with the oil.

Hi mate, raw linseed oil will be soaked into the wood in a day or two, unless some previous stuff has been applied ( which is probable) Good value, smells great, but stains smart skirts, pets etc..
Try just leaving yor garden furniture out for a season, and see what happens, it will probly last longer than you might imagine..
It is impossible to make wood tolerate outdoor conditions without committing your self to time and/or dosh in my opinion, and it's tempting to over think it.
It might be best value to leave it, and come to a viewpoint in a year or three.
Speaking as a chap who sails about on old wooden sailing vessels. Happy Easter to you anyway.

I’ve read the reviews about osmo oil and bought a tin, tried it on a few small projects, it’s great stuff

I just done 6 oak doors with it after pondering the variety of finishes. it soaks in to the grain and has a durable finish

That osmo stuff gets rave reviews and pricewise not that much more expensive, also as mentioned I may be overthinking it and a season to weather may be an idea.

creosote and engine oil will last for years but not very nice if kids are playing on it it never drys
