Wood stove: top plate replacement.Steel Type?

We've a Stovax Riva 66 Stove. The top plate needs replacing. Stovax want a ridiculous amount for new one, even 2nd hand ones are stupid money.

What would be the best type of steel to make a replacement from? Corten?

I'll bet the original is ordinary mild steel, I really wouldn't worry about it.

Do you mean the baffle/throat plate (s)? I think stovax make them from 3mm probably s275 or similar. Best bet would be to make the replacement out of 5mm but you may need to change the fixings if they hang on little turned buttons. There's not really any need for special grades of steel. They just need to be thicker imho.

My throat plate in my stove is 4mm mild steel nothing fancy

I have replaced mine with thicker MS plate than was fitted and added better supports. there is no special steel

Mine is made from cast iron at least 6 mill thick
I would think hot rolled plate would be fine

The heat on a stove toplate which is the hottest part, is around 250 / 300 o c, its nothing that will affect mild steel.

I had a deal with a stove manufacturer for supplies of Corten, as they used it for all their stoves. Slows the corrosion considerably= longer life.

Our solid fuel rayburn's hotplate can, if we really want some heat out of it, max out my IR thermometer (560c) and, if i dont pay attention, the cast iron plate can glow (i think about 650-700c). Agreed, this is nowhere close to steel melting temps, but it is hot enough to distort.

I know this for sure, as fitted a baffle a while back. I used what i had to hand, which was some steel from an old kerosene tank (i guess 2.5mm ish, but i did not measure)

I think it lasted 3 days before bowing. Which was ok, as its just a prototype, but, still.... (it was not a tight fit causing expansion issues)

OK, I was referring to a Morso squirrel stove, the range I used to have could get the hotplate to glow like you said, maybe the small firebox on ranges is the reason for that.

Naturally 2.5 is biscuit tin thin for inside a stove.

Our main stove is Corten but the baffle is stainless. While it has distorted a bit, there is no problem with corrosion. 11 years of hard winter use.
