Pine tar otherwise known as Stockholm tar is wonderful stuff, it is good for all sorts of things & i used to use it as boat soup, a thin mix of pine tar, turpentine & linseed oil this was used on traditional wooden boats to soak the planking & hull to preserve them. It takes forever to dry & will rub off on your clothes for years even when dry. Fine if you dont mind smelling like an ancient shellback!

Could never find a supplier of pine tar, last time I looked. Was a few years ago though. Is it readily available?

Raw does not dry, you are correct, boiled is better for wood

Raw linseed oil is a naturally air drying and polymerizing oil and it does dry but takes about 3 or 4 times longer to dry than boiled Linseed oil.

Boiled linseed oil is not exactly boiled but chemically fracked with heavy metals and is in fact poisonous to Humans, pets and wildlife alike.

All of my 48 bee hives (which are all made from reclaimed pallet timbers), my garden planters, sideways growbag boxes, etc, are all preserved with at least two coats of cold pressed and filtered raw linseed oil (equestrian food supplement grade) and then coated with the same Linseed oil blended with beeswax.

Most of my beehives are 3-4 years old now and were only treated when they were being made and all of them are excellent condition regardless of their placing; some are sheltered positions against fences and hedges, some are out in open fields and others are on windswept boggy marshland. The wooden garden planters we have are all over 6 years old now and are only showing deterioration where the soil touches the timbers.... but these were originally designed and planned with a 5 year working lifespan and are going to be replaced as they worsen over the next 12-24 months. My sideways grow bag frames and potato towers are all in excellent condition, but these have only been used for 2 growing seasons and are emptied, and cleaned and stacked under an open cover lean-to for the winter-none growing season.

On steel I use blended Linseed oil & beeswax on the sculptures I prepare and then finish for local artists, on the plasma "play-about" art I do and steel that I have to store outside before using........... it wipes off easily with standard thinners.

This year due to Monty Don's gardening show I had a damn good run of bent 6mm mild steel bar plant stands all of which were coated in Linseed oil & beeswax and most of my customers liked them so much that they are now placing repeat orders for next year to supplement the ones they have already purchased from me. The commercial orchard tree and growers plant supports that I make from steel are all hot dip galvanised, but I give them all a complimentary coat of the linseed oil & beeswax blend and even those at 5 years old still have shiny zinc showing under the well dried and hardened coat of Linseed oil & beeswax.
