If they're anything like the Lidl Parkside drills they use an oddball belt only available from one place in England and they are expensive! I think I gave £20 for the last set of belts, the whole drill only cost £40.

the current belt on the lathe came from euro car parts as a renault clio pas belt for £2.30 but i will bear that in mind

today i spent most of my time making some new belt guards which are now sat in primer till tomorrow so i can paint them.
but i did manage to get some more pictures of the lathe as it stands.
you can see the new bracket i made to hold the drill collar
and you can see the triangular piece of ply the drill is bolted to which can slide back and forth to tension the belt and then fixed in place by the big nut in the middle.

Here' a warning from one afflicted, wood lathes create needs , ie turning tools , bandsaws, faceplate, bigger lathe , dust, more dust, polish spattered clothing and glasses, also loads of bits of timber,the list goes on, I ot my first lathe in 1979, built my current lathe in 1983, 12 in over bed ,6 ft between centres, rotating headstock for bigger stuff, be warned

They also need much higher speeds than metal. What rpm are you achieving at the spindle? You really want it capable of between 1000-4000rpm if you want clean cuts, sharp tools help too.

luckily its a 2 speed drill with a variable trigger so i can see 500-3000rpm at the drill. the pulley system will take it down by a third at its current setup so probably 2000rpm max unless i drop the headstock down to the lowest setting then it will be 1:1 so 3000rpm.
i know what you mean rosinante, its going to be located at a woodshed full of carvers so bandsaws and the like machinery they already have, otherwise i could see it being an expensive hobby.
i do have a set of turning tools which i plan to keep with the lathe so hopefully there shouldn't be too much more expense.
if they like turning small things I'm hoping the carving club might purchase a bigger machine to bowls and the like.
i kind of see this lathe as experimental to see if people enjoy doing it/having a go.
plus its been fun working on something different from cars

Plain turning you'll be looking at 2000-4000, 1000-2000 for bowl turning. Nice guard.

but thats the reason i set it up the way it currently is, i daresay i will play around with it a bit and see how it goes.
