Wood for gates!!!

Hi,

I'm wanting to make some double gates at home, 40mm box frame with the wood infill panels.

Have no clue what wood to buy or where to buy it from.

Any ideas???

New, "seconds", scaffold boards, chamfered with 6mm ply T&G (glued one side) up the long sides with 3 coats of Bedec barn paint...all on a galv steel frame:

Ends and edges only done with the Cuprinol:

Start 'em young:

Sacrificial base board:

Still got to build the pillars etc!

We have an excellent timber merchant in Ellon who I bought my gate timber from for my gates at our cottage which is right by the sea. It’s just treated pine (I think) which they cut to size for me and cut the top profile as well. I just paint them with a decent exterior oil based gloss paint and they still look like new

Yep. Aiming for gargoyles/dragons or maybe the Alien Queen! I did everything on CAD right down to the shuttering and it's all worked out!

Thinking rather than laying bricks to make a slip form and cast pseudo bricks. Having inset panels of local flint.

Another vote for Cedar.
Look at Pitch Pine or well seasoned Larch.

Or if money is no restrictions heart of Yew.

All will respond to a good Oil finish. Steep the end grains and seal if possible.

Looks like stonehaven to me in the distance. But have to agree that is a grand view. Sea views have a premium, not sure why. As for gates one day mine will become a cattle grid as its a pain in the butt, and the ones from IAE garbage.

And no std steel screws, bolts. It totally eats them. To be fair it's the wrong wood you require iroko ( which is best left untreated /painted) or as a cheaper option one of the mahoganys with sickens or similar.

do you ever have any problems with the neighbors?..looks a great place to live
