Which is why you shouldn't use them in a power drill. They're designed to be used at very low speed under a high load. You can buy wood auger bits for modern drills but you will see the auger is different on these and has a much greater surface area

Hmm...

Now this is not a veiled for sale post, but it there any value to selling these? My feelings are that in have a load of them, and I may do better to flog them, and get a set of bits that I can fit in an electric drill.

...but if the whole draw will only fetch £2, then i will probabpy end up storing them for the next decade, just in case!

I would think I have, maybe, 30 of them, from half inch to, maybe, one and three quarter.

What I mean is, are they still popular with anyone, or is it more a case of nostalgia, and anyone wanting to get a job done would just use electricity?

I have about 50 old bits, some of them my Grandfathers, They spend ore time collecting dust and killing spiders.
But when you do need to bore a deep wide hole in wood, you shifting a tight screw ( I made a cross head bit) you can not beat them.
Some were in the workshops is a 3/4 socket adapter, hence the nee to tidy the workshops.

Last boot sale I was at they were selling from 10p each to a few pounds for a bundle.

I think the old ones are better, but the new augurs bits are good in modern drills.

A big advantage of the brace with a wood auger is even run carefully in an electric drill at slow speed - it's still fast! You get pulled in with augers and it's very easy to go too deep with the hole as a result. Fine if you want to go all the way not so great if you don't

Generally speaking you don't go all the way through - you keep drilling until the point breaks through and then use that hole as a centre to drill in the opposite direction, thus avoiding splinters.

That's true. The brace is used to give greater control of angles too - apparently it's easier to get a true 90 degrees by hand than with a power drill. I've actually stopped using spade bits and I use my brace for counter-boring now as the level of control is much better.

In my local, well within 60 miles, they do Forestall bits and angle bits in modem steel to fit old brace an bits drills, but cost a small fortune.

Yes. Point was do it with a power drill even slow and it draws itself in deeper with some force generated by the screw action
I don't think I could stop a half inch one that close to the break through the pitch is too aggressive when under power
Even with a stop set I coulnt trust one personally
