Wood drill bit selection.

i have some wooden balls that I need to drill a non through hole into. I’ve drilled out a block that they sit into snuggly which holds them for drilling hole size is 16mm once drilled out they will be going onto a steel bar

do I use a brad bit or Forstner bit?

Are screwfix forstners any good need it this weekend.

My choice would be for the Forstner bit [I bought my boxed set for £2 at Cash Convertors ] or what about a spade bit. Would just need to ensure the point wasn't too long and came through to other side. Like this

They are Ok from Screwfix. I have a set. Just don't be brutal. They can be sharpened if they loose their edge.

If you know what size you can get a Bosch Flat fit from B&Q for a few pounds.

If you are after just 1 size, B&Q do a good name for a few pounds.

The Screwfix bits I have found are not keen on hard woods. But can be dressed.

Avoid the bits with a screw thread on the tip, as they will pull the bit in and can result in a deeper hole than you need.

I did think of a spade bit but discounted as I didn’t think they were for clean cuts?

A decent spade bit will cut clean but tend to blow out a little at the back.
Look for the horns on the extremes of the spade. These act as as a trepan and make a clean cut below the level of the spade and prevent breakout.

Drill through until the tip breaks through the other side, by about half it's own length.

Then drill from the other side.

Saves break out splintering.

Go for forstner or saw tooth bits, will give a flat bottom and save the risk of going right through, not sure if 16mm is a standard size, loads of differing suppliers but if a one off just buy the one size you need instead of a set. The cheaper ones give reasonable results if a quick sharpen is given.

I am a beginner, I dont know much but my friends gave a birthday present a Bosch gsb 15. Now Im in a difficult situation I choose a set of drill it is important for me that they are of high quality and universal. I think you also need to buy a drill that fits the size. If you end up with a low-quality bit, your holes will chip and the drill might spin and even hurt your arm. *LINK REMOVED* However, even the good impact driver can pretty much be rendered useless when you don’t have the right set of bits to back it up.
