same but i use recirocating saw because i am lazieri dig under them and chop all the roots off
because i get loads of wood saws at end of life but still good enough to use they get used for anything or further wood cutting
The sharp spikes on that tool will last all of half a nano second when they hit the first stone, it's designed/intended for carving not cutting!
I just dig away what I can then cut using an old chaindig round the roots and hose the mud off them. when dry just use a chainsaw
I have tried the dig out and recip saw approach but there just too big..fingers crossed this guy comes up trumps for me, will save ALOT of work
Always called them a pole axeFor smaller roots around a 2-3 inch diameter, I am thinking of making a straight version of this item: the Burke bar. Head is about 5kg, whole thing comes in at over 10kg to a sharpened cutting edge. Mind your toes!
The current one is great for chopping into roots and leveraging the whole thing out. I reckon a straight version, like a (very) heavyweight spade, would chop though roots easily. Like a linear axe.
I suppose it is also a bit like a super heavy duty, one sided post hole digger.
