Hi All my first post here.

Can any one tell me why you cannot use high tempreture silicone on the glass in a wood stove instead of using the fire rope, is it because the glass expands under heat and will crack if it cannot move?

Possibility of both glass and cast iron door expanding and contracting, hence fire rope seal, I had to pop in new rope prior to this Octobers burning season. Even rope deteriorates at such high temperatures put out by a wood burner.........

it was a new sove and the rope lasted about a week!!! now the glass gets dirty every day where the air gets in!

thought silicone might be easier

Original rope I recently replaced was very thin to say the least. I took out glass, I then bought thinnest round rope I could buy at local stove store, flattened in vice as best it would flatten, then installed around glass help in cast doors (2)

I should state, original rope flat and thin, wafer thin!

Ps, glass does not go black due to air entering between glass and door flame, I think you need to open up secondary burn vents (airwash) could be wrong tho, depends on stove type?

There is a seal which is about 1.5mm thick, should last a fair amount of time the glass on my Morso squirel is sealed with the above mentioned and has been in for a couple of years.

You could put a bead of silicone round the aperture and let it go off before fitting the glass so it is not stuck to both surfaces but still acts as a seal. The glass in ours is only held by four metal tabs and the rope is quite thick. I've used silicone exhaust sealant which stands up to heat well to glue the rope back on.

pedro I was thinking about doing that with the bead of silicone (its made for very high temretures wood stoves / boilers etc) so could work! I just wondered if anyone had used it before?

Not a good idea to let it go off before fitting the glass if using silicone fit the glass when soft. When fitting the new rope / tape for a thinner seal if you have not cleaned the surface properly leaving the slightest bit of hardened tar and fit the glass it can break even with light tension on the four tabs. Have seen glass break using old rope had the glass fitted sitting having a cuppa and next thing tick the glass has a crack across the lenght of it.

Put a load of rock salt on the fire, it will somehow? clean all the black stuff of the door glass!!

thanks for the tip - but cleaning the glass is ok with vinigar and ash from the fire- works well but a bit of a pain every day
