Pyrex dish/bowl for the door window, Charity shops are your best source, I have quite a stash ready for future burner projects, just a bit of fire proof rope around the flange and held in with 3 clamping plates (loosely)

nice to see some more unconventional wood burners , going to pinch a few different ideas I think.
problem I had with the baffle was all the smoke was coming back out cut out
as for air inlet , is it better to have a separate inlet eg small pipe or will a cut out suffice.

I've made hundreds of woodburners, but so far this is the only one I've ever made from a gas bottle!

This is mine which I made from a big gas bottle and the rest was scrap. It has vents under the grille to fuel air in from below but it also has a vent at the rear which sends air up the back of the burner and over the top of the fire letting escape through lots of small holes sending the unspent gases back in to the fire (secondary burn). Just above the secondary burn chamber is a baffle plate which covers around 3/4 of the bottle. The only thing I would change on it is the top plate. Its only 3mm thick and has now 'bellied' in the middle due to the heat.

I don't know why but I just love making the them....mind you this one cost me a trip to A&E grain of ceramic dust in the eye ball! haha, so much for wearing the new Adflo 3M M-300 :S

i get mine from gumtree , not sure about everyone else

There's a pile of them behind a low fence at a local recycling centre...

Also, ex pikey sites often have them.

Saw a pikey site last week , loads of the bigger bottles (47 kg?) went back last night when they packed up and thy took the lot , was absolutely gutted

They seem pretty cheap on gumtree and ebay £15 for 47kg so I may get one or two and build a BBQ and wood burner.

Mobile burger vans have them stood outside with no chain, it's only a rubber hose to cut.
Put ya fag out before ya do it because the loud bang puts them wise to what your up too

I understand your point, so I'll ask again. Is there any legal way of buying these? Do Calor etc. ever sell them?

Calor claim they will prosecute you if you cut one open so I doubt it. If you wanted to make them and sell them, you'd be better off rolling your own steel plate.

I have four in my workshop that were either by the side of the road or given to me and two in the yard that just appeared one day!!
If your passing irlam one day your more than welcome to pop in for one. I'm not one for throwing anything out but would rather see someone benefit from it instead
