I recall reading somewhere that in the shipyards during the war, if there was something that needed to be welded upside down & using a mirror the women were far better & were asked to do it. The theory was that they were practiced at using a mirror from doing make up, I think it might have been to get the women into a ..... errr “compromising” position I asked my female dentist one time how long did it take to learn to do everything backwards using the mirror & she said you pick it up very quickly.

The firm I worked for as well as making steel had a world reknowned bridge building arm.
When WW2 broke out, in common with numerous industries the workers enlisted in the services amongst them many skilled welders. Again in common with many industries they drafted in women to fill the skill shortage, in all they trained 40 women welders.
At the end of the war when the men came home, most women went back to domestic life leaving the men to take up where they had left off.
This did not happen our bridge construction arm, the women had proved to be that good at welding that they were all encouraged to stay on. Many did & had long careers due to their skill.

My son is at Clydebank this week doing welding. If it’s the same tutor they will learn a lot.

I phoned up about this for the missus, firstly its fully booked but they were quite ambiguous about whether it was for union members only....I get the feeling they meant it for members only but had to accept non-members. Now I need to find my missus a 1 day welding course because I've got her hopes up

Fife college so would be either Rosyth or Glenrothes; start my TIG welding evening course tomorrow.

I guess neither would be more than three-quarters of an hour away by car from Perth, depending on traffic?

I did a couple of hours of welding at night school 10 years ago or so at Oatridge College, half the people on it were women.
