Wolf Mig welder

I am just about the start learning to weld, basically im after something that can handle light car restoration e.g. the odd panel and plate nothing to major.

I have found a Wold mig welder set up on ebay that seems to be cheap!

I know buy cheap buy twice but it really wont be getting alot of used so would something like this be ok to start out with?

I don't know the welder myself but if you look round the forum you will see that quite a few new members join the forum due to problems with the budget welders. If you look lower down this page at the "similar threads" and read "Wolf Mig Welder" 3rd one down may answer some of you questions. Also note that when you say it won't get a lot of use, you will find word will get around that you can weld and odd jobs will spring up pocket money?... BTW I use a 25+ year old Clerk. Works for me

I had the exact same machine, usually I am fairly lenient in my comments regarding merchandise but in this case I would not have even used it as a door stop, the wire feed was awful, no matter what I did, could not get rid of it fast enough.

Ive seen clark do a mig welder for a reasonable price which has a max rating of 90 amps, would this be man enough? It claims to be able to weld upto 4mm thickness

Hehe, not a chance! 2mm would be more realistic.

For the price of the Wolf, you could get a good used Clarke around the 130 to 150 amp range, just make sure the owner shows it welding, with good results and you will be fine.

The Clarke 90 is fine if just kept for thin panel work, but as Steve says, you would be better off with a 130 - 150 Amp Clarke, then you can do the occasional 3 - 4 mm job as well.

Whatever you get, you'll find you need/would like something a bit more powerful in a year or two.

Clarkes are decent enough machines, but their advertising copywriters tend to be...creative... Which means they talk out of their rectal zones...

Ok then ill keep an eye out for something a bit more powerful. Has anyone heard of/had experience of Siegen welders? Ive found one of their 130A miniMIG welders in a sale for sub £200

The Siegen welders have been the same as the Wolf ones. The regular Sealy ones are supposedly on par with the CLarkes.

Get yourself a Clarke 130 en don,t bother with Siegen and stay clear of the new Clarke Migs 145,152,180,196 as these are re-badged wolf welders like the one you found on Ebay That way you can weld up to 4mm with gas or use gasless wire (horrible stuff)
