Connect the brushes in series with the field coils. Difficult to tell, you may have split field coils for two speeds.
In theorey connecting the coils in parallel with the armature will give higher torque, but in practice will most likely blow the fuse. You could try parallel connections with a lower voltage, or even try it on a 12v car battery.

I bought a lathe and was having issues with speed control of the cap start induction motor it had sucky torque.
I just wired up a universal replacement washing machine motor with help from you, I used a laptop power supply @ 19v 4A DC and it runs nice and slow but with lots of torque, before I saw this thread I thought it would be ridiculous because of its high (12,000) rpm.
I will now build or buy a decent DC power supply and make a speed control to listen to the taco, Thank you for sharing your knowlage.
