Wire sizes?

Hi All,
Been reading the info on selecting the best make / model for my use, looks like a clarke fits the bill but what difference does 0.6 or 0.8 mm wire make to the current / power settings?

0.6mm on tin, ie.car bodywork & 0.8mm on anything thicker. The thicker the wire the more current is needed to melt it, so thick wire on thin sheet is not a good combination.

Thanks for info Weldequip, I will go for the 0.8mm as I want to stick bits to my Land Rover chassis.

The difference between 0.6 and 0.8 doesnt seem much but infact 0.8mm is almost twice the size. If you take the cross sectional area or the weight per metre (or unit length) the 0.6 = 0.28 mm2 whilst the 0.8mm = 0.50 mm2.
Thats why the current needed is so much more.
