Having amp control does what for you plz Malcolm? I normally leave the wire feed speed alone and use the volt switches to control my welder.
I find it most useful welding thin metal. On the minimum voltage I'll often turn the wire speed down as low as it will go without burning back (which often means having the torch very close to the work). This reduces power and the chances of blowing holes.
For metal between 1.5mm and 4mm I'll tend to just set the wire speed to where it makes the nicest welds and not use the fine control of the wire speed.
