wiper motors

Just had a call from daughter,her wipers blew a fuse and when it was replaced motor was struggling to move ,car is a pugeot 306 diesel....anyone know if speeds are controlled through the motor or through a resistor pack like blower motors on heaters ,i haven't seen it yet so i know nothing more than her description ,unfortunatley,so any advice welcome ,don't want to go and get a salvage motor if there could be another fault,don't think it can be the relay,that might control intermitent wipe but surely not speed as well?.....no haynes for the car yet either so i haven't got a wiring diagram either....many thanks Gav

Could be a siezed wiper spindle. The part that comes through the bulk head and has the arm attached to it. This causes a high current draw and blown fuse. Disconnect wiper linkage from the motor and try moving the arms. If stiff then lube spindles or replace.

As said check for mechanical binds. FYI two-speed wipers motors I've seen have three wires, fast, slow and earth.

Many thanks for all advice ,wiper motor did have 3 wires and checking the forums it appears quite a common failure with pugs,the drain hole beneath the motor fills with leaves and stops the water from draining away and can flood the motor,Scrap yard charged £15 for replacement motor fitted in an hour! people on forums quoting £80 for new motor and up to £200 to fit .....Thanks Gav

Hi,

Ilexa members are mostly garage owners or mechanics so they'll quote the full rate for the job. They also tend to tell people that they're not capable of doing a particular job without checking if that person has the right tools and relevant experience. But if you're after advice and keep at it they'll tell you what you need to know.

Pug/Citroen are known for dodgy electrics, especially the later models (after 2000).
