vista is trash especially when it comes to repairing problems caused by multiple viruses

windows 7 seems ok up to now

I was loading some stuff onto the new machine, jesus, it was behaving like the missus - 'are you sure' 'this could be harmful' ' this might be a virus' 'are you really sure'.
Gonna have to sort something. The huge icons and big text is annoying, i've shrunk it as far as possible, and its still like the screen is shouting at me.

You can set it to use 'classical icons' which are the ones I'm familiar with from Windows 2000 Pro

Right click on a blank bit of the desktop, top option is 'view' from there select 'classic'

go into the control panel look for the system folder then choose device manager that will show if anything needs attention

I have the perfect cure for vista, Reformat and install XP pro, we have 2 identical laptops in our house one with xp one with vista, by comparison the vista machine is almost unusable, It questions everything you try to do, wont run older software, and is just so slow. absolute rubbish, any other product you buy as bad as this would be deemed unfit for purpose and jumped on by trading standards,

Great. Its annoyed me after a couple of hours fiddling so doesnt bode well for a couple of years service. I've got the 'classical icons' but they are stupid. Loaded Solidworks on; you have to keep scrolling left to right cos its made all the menus podgy so they dont even fit on the screen.
If i reload windows, do i loose everything i have installed?

do you have the screen resolution set correctly aswell

Right click an empty part of the desktop, then left click personalize.
In the box that appears, click display settings.
On the window that appears, in the resolution section, is a sliding arrow, move it to the right end of the scale. In the Colors box to the right of it, set to highest (32bit)

If the slider doesn't move or the colour box doesn't have that, your graphics card will need reinstalling.
Above the resolution slider and colour box, there should be some text, something like xxx monitor on xxxx, could you reply with whats written there.

I got xp on works computers and vista on laptop, there are all the old settings and familier bits you are used to in there, you just have to find all the bits to change to find them.
Actually i would say vista is the same as xp but with a whole heap of window dressing!!!!!
Same thing just disguised and re sold as a new op system. With a whole load of check and re check nag popups.

Vista was just a money maker. XP was getting old and cheap, so they brought out a filler product until 7 was released.

vista was altered more then that, people who bought laptops with vista were actually going back to xp and reporting that battery time increased and various other improvements, out of vista xp and 7 vista had the slowest boot time and was processor hungry whilst 7 came out top every time so it seems that microsoft took note of peoples dislike of vista and came up with something that actually works with fewer problems.

Win 7's alright. I coped with that after getting my head round XP pro. If only solidworks and that worked on Mac, life would be so much nicer and fluffy bunny like, instead of REALLY SWEARY, which is the natural state after ten minutes with most windows systems.

I've had Vista on here for a couple of years and the only problem I had is drivers for older peripherals like the scanner. We bought a new machine and it has 7 on and is pretty much the same to me.

I use vmware to run old unsupported software and hardware on my new PC
http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
It means I can use my minidisc and clie with vista even though the hardware support is not there in vista.

If you are thinking of upgrading to Vista DONT, go straight to Windows 7 as according to the computer guy who looks after our computers, Windows 7 is Vista but with all the 'fixes' carried out and is far stable/superior

We run XP on all of ours both profsnl and home and they are rock solid

I persionally have used windows 3.1, 95, millenium, 98 and XP and would only contemplate XP or Windows 7

(even dabbled in IBM OS2 Warp)

I have used Vista for some 4 years and had no problems with it. I do however prefer Windows 7, as I do think that its a corrected version of Vista.

Problem is people slate it without learning to use it. If your Icons are too big on the screen just press ctrl and scroll your mouse button.
