Windows media player keeps stopping

I have used WMP for years from XP to wlndows 10 with no issues.

I Don't know If it is the updates that come through, that maybe inadvertently mess other things up on computers.

Has anyone experienced the stop/start issues of WMP and how it was resolved.

ive used the old media player which was with kazzaa

but i used vlc from the same install package year 2000

vlc is better

you can reset wmp to a default setting but if windows has updated it then your stuck with it

the best soloution is to use vlc media player

i dont have windows 10/11 as microsoft can keep that free trash to themselves so i cant help any further

You could take a look at the Windows Event Viewer>Applications. You can filter the logs to look at events for given programs, the log records will be very long if they have not been cleared for a long time, you may find errors that began after an update, or not. I remember one instance of a security patch for Windows 7 that borked Windows Media Center (NOT player) for a few days before it was rectified by another patch. If the error is related to MS Windows it possibly will be recorded, anyhow Windows key+R then eventvwr or you can get there via the control panel on Win 10.
If you are using a codec pack such as Shark007 then you are in limboland. The usual first step is the MS equivalent of take the batteries out, leave and refit. You may "remove" it and then reinstate it, sometimes works.

It works well but on a laptop not connected to a power brick it likes to sup battery at a thirsty rate. Enabling hardware acceleration is beneficial if using VLC on a lappy not connected to power. On a desktop running Windows? No contest, I use Windows Media Center (not WMP) and have done without issue for thirteen years playing any file container, audio standard or compression that exists to this day. Native Matroska support is garbage in Win 10/11, most Win 10 users force LAV filter use, with Win 7 there is no native Matroska support so LAV or the hated Haali splitter are the choices.

I came across VLC for Android phones a while back.
It did not occur to me to put it on the desktop PC. Don't we need to create an account with Microsoft before D loading an App for Windows?

ive got android phones and ive never created an account and never downloading any apps from the store either

though 1 of my phones does not have the music player on it

as goes for making an account to download apps i disagree with that as thats control forcing owners to sign up to download apps when they should be available for everyone and for every program out there

but with windows 10/11 its free they control it, not the owner of the pc windows 10/11 is worse than vista and vista you had to pay for it

You may download from the Windows store or direct from the developers website Videolan.org, it is a 38MB download. It will install on Win 10, you will probably have to run as administrator if you are on a user account.
