Windows 10 reinstall

I'm not going to need sad speeds or anything like that, it's just to take over the workshop, turn on, and leave there all day to look up the odd bit of info and read measurements from drawings I have done and stuff like that. At the moment its taking ages to open programs but it is loading loads of stuff I dont need or cant remove at startup.
My better half bought it 2 or 3 years ago for a one off job and after that used it for installing anything that she didn't want clogging up her decent laptop. I only dug it out as I want to look at some fusion files and my normal worktop machine is still running xp.
I think the existing drive is only 30gb or so but should be plenty as I will only be viewing stuff hats on usb drives anyway

Have a couple of 400 odd gb drives spare here after updating to ssd if you want one 30gb doesn't go far on windows 10?

that 30gb is going to go no where

A Windows 10 install can range from (roughly) 25 to 40 GB depending on the version and flavour of Windows 10 being installed. Home, Pro, Enterprise etc.

with updates its going to be higher

that hard drive is too small i know whats in mine as checked on it as its a 500gb but the smaller version is this

for any updates its far better to get an upgrade on that drive

Even a 64Gb SSD is not enough, IIRC Windows now needs something like 20Gb free space to upgrade.

128Gb will see you sorted and they are cheap now

I just checked it and the hdd is only about 30gb.
It came with a 1TB cloud storage subscription that was free for a year but was never used and has now expired.
I dont have internet in the workshop (and wont need it for this laptop) so I was hoping once I had done a clean install I could disable windows updates and just take files I want to view over with me on a usb stick.

I am only planning to install win 10 and fusion 360.
I will use the laptop to look at drawings while I am making stuff, If I have to make any changes I make notes on my phone or a notepad doc saved on the usb stick then revise the drawings on my desktop pc when I get home.

The boot speed and the speed a program opens is not really going to be an issue and I will want to load files from usb stick so I dont see any advantage of a ssd drive (for this machine).

With that said, if you guys still think I need a larger drive I will open it up tonight and see what type of drive it is as I might as well change it before a new install. I can have a look and see if there is room for a memory upgrade at the same time then!

Another option,
Can I just do an nLite install of windows 10?
Fusion only seems to need 3gb or so to install.
Never tried nLite with 10 but used it a few times with xp and that reduced the os size by half.

If you’re not in a rush I will most likely have a laptop hard drive, you can have for the cost of postage once I’ve wiped it.

I’m not the most computer savvy, but buy as big an sdd as you can afford. I found that the difference it made to my laptop is impressive. My laptop died about a year ago, and I bought a second hand one off fleabay, so took the opportunity to upgrade the sdd. It now loads software programmes way quicker, and I have even cut down on my coffee consumption while filling time on startup.

you can take it apart but if you got your model number or name you can search on youtube to take it apart and upgrade its hard drive

I have had to sort a few of these notebooks with only a 32gb drive, in all cases I ended up fitting a 128GB M2 SSD drive as that tends to be the only expansion port in them as far as storage is concerned.
Some were trickier than others to migrate the OS to the new drive and make the pc see it as the primary drive but it is eminently doable.

SSD is the only way to go these days, they are not expensive! I bought a new 500gb crucial off amazon 2 weeks ago for around £65? I am assuming your laptop takes 2.5" sata drives?

I might have a 250gb drive to sell if you want...

Just to update this (I started this thread a while ago!)

I did a clean install from a microsoft download and let it run all the updates downloaded the latest drivers and disabled anything I did not want to use.
My idea was once it was set up then it would be easy enough to clone to a bigger drive if required.
I installed fusion and still had about 5gb spare before deleting any zipped copies of the drivers etc.

Once actually trying to use it in the workshop fusion would randomly lag/lock up and it soon got annoying so I gave up on it thinking either the laptop specs were to low or there was not enough space or a hardware problem etc.

I have since installed fusion on a higher spec laptop with loads of space and I still get the same problem with fusion freezing from between 5 and 30seconds every now and again.
This only happens when using the laptop in the workshop, at first I thought the graphics card/processor might have been slowing down when running on the battery but it's no better when plugged in.

I have come to the conclusion that it's because I'm using fusion off-line. I think the freeze is when its trying to auto-save.
Not messed with it any further for the last few weeks but I was watching a thread on here with the same problem that I cant find now...

ive got a few where rufus software refuses so had to fall onto others to get what ive needed

Driver conflicts causing latency.

The Rufus I listed above is just one of thousands of tools,Google will recommend more related software,i think installing Windows 10 from a Windows installation disk would be a safer method.

Did you remove the junkware that most of us never use? The DISM tool will help you do this, thus:
Open Powershell as ADMIN, then run the following command
DISM /Online /Get-ProvisionedAppxPackages | select-string Packagename

This gives you a list of all the stuff you never knew was installed. Things like XBOX framework, Zune Music etc. You can remove that stuff with commands like:
Get-AppxPackage *Microsoft.XboxApp* | Remove-AppxPackage

Keep going until you have nothing in the list that you don't want. This is an example of how to use it and this list is quite short, yours will be longer I guess. Google will help in identifying the weird packages and how safe they are to remove. But a stripped out version is much faster running and although it's a bit tedious it is worth doing. My really old Sony Vaio was ready for the bin really, dual core Pentium, 2gb and a 60GB hard disk. Came with XP all those years back and is now happily running Windows-10 at a very acceptable performance level.

It has been a long time since i had to install Windows, I think last time i did it i used Windows retestrak XP and Borg xp versions, I have a spare laptop that i want to put a new SSD in so i am up for a learning week
