Some youngster ***** has put an airgun pellet through a glass pane in my window. I have old galvanised window frames in my garage with 12 panes of glass in each. Last time I renewed a pane I used the old fashioned linseed oil putty. Is there anything more modern out for doing this job now? It took quite some time for me to replace the broken glass the old way and when I went back next day I discovered that birds had eaten most of the putty off the frame so had to do it over again and gloss paint to stop them. Thanks very much.......

There are more modern things, but because they all stick better than putty when you come to replace broken glass it's a pain to get it off...

On a cheapo garden shed I have the putty kept breaking due to the area flexing during gales so I cleaned it out and put a good run of silicone in it's place.

Been about 4 or 5 years now and still stuck well in place.

I used outdoor sealant type clear mastic on some windows years ago and it is still holding, much easier than putty.

I'd go with putty if frame movement/flex isn't a problem. Just cover the window/pane over with some form of sheet whilst the putty cures enough to paint, to stop the birds picking at it.

Thanks fella's. I was thinking along the lines of, quick bead of silicon on the frame to bed the glass in, then some kinda white triangular plastic strips glued in with silicon on the outside where the putty should be. May well be easier in the end with putty tho.

original linseed oil putty is for softwood windows not metal. u want multi purpuse putty or similar for metal casement windows

Thank you bs, we are always learning, I did'nt know there are different types of putty. Think people used to paint the wooden frames and asticles first so it did'nt suck the linseed oil outa the putty.
