The approach I've been using is to just put a thin tile backer board over the brick/block. The tile backer has an insulation layer and that helps reduce cold bridging (from outer to inner skin).
If you are careful you can trim off the plaster snots and keep the tiles in place...just match the thickness needed and drop it in...pu foam adhesive to hold it down.
Just want to say thank you again. Sorted out the slate window sills in the kitchen using the method you suggested and with new windows fitted looks great and rock solid too.
The living room window was replaced at the same time and I decided to remove the fascia board window sill before they arrived and it went horribly wrong as the interior brickwork fell apart with it. Black ash mortar and prior bodge jobs meant the wall was held together mainly by wallpaper and the window sill. I had to wait until my brother had to time to rebuild it before I was able to level it all off with backer board ready for the window sill to be fitted. Using the PU adhesive makes it so much quicker and less mess too.
Just need to find a plasterer now and the wife might forgive me.
