window handle thread fix?

I replaced a broken handle on a mates bedroom window today but the top screw would not tighten up, the threads are gone basicly in the metal plate that hold the handle on. The bottom one is fine. So I need a easy fix as I aint taking the window apart to repair it unless I really have to. I did think a pop rivet may do the job.

That's what I'd do.

dirty tap a m6 straight through the worn out M5 with a bottom/plug tap

Whack some Araldite or similar on the screw threads, pop the screw in there, & see if it gives you suitable hold once set. It'll form threads, so you can nip the screw up slightly once it's hardened.

superglue a wooden dowel on a taper hammer it then when set put a screw it rather than a bolt it doesn't take much force or a shortened modified rawl plug . i appreciate its not a professional solution

I nearly did use a rawl plug! opted for some of the plastic bag around the screw for now!

Whack some Araldite or similar on the screw threads, pop the screw in there, & see if it gives you suitable hold once set. It'll form threads, so you can nip the screw up slightly once it's hardened.

Araldite it in, tell your mate not to touch it for 48 hours, run away, block him on your phone, tell him you're moving to New Zealand Saturday.

Put boot polish on the screw and it should let the Araldite set but not stick to the screw

Araldite or jb weld but put a bit of ptfe on the bolt, this way can wind the screw out if needed.

A faint smear of grease / petroleum jelly etc on the threads, will do that.

Someone told me chemical resin fix can do the same....wait till it's about to go hard and then just drive the screw in.

I never tried it but imagine any epoxy would work...might be a permanent repair unless you cost the screw.

I agree better than tapping it to m6 because there will probably only be 2 threads If i did that

check first that your new screw can be fitted through the handle as many cant

you can widden the hole slightly on the handle fitting for a new screw to be used and then tap the window frame metal

sometimes a different handle can be fitted as they have wider holes in there plates

but on many windows they do get to a stage where it has to be a new window fitted

it is not actually the window frame metal, there is a floating metal plate behind the upvc
